Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Frank McAvennie from season one.
In part two, Frank describes West Ham’s almost-annus mirabilis under John Lyall, when they could and perhaps should have won the First Division title. Rival Kenny Dalglish seemed to think so. Also, falling out with Sir Alex at Scotland and TV stardom.

Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Frank McAvennie from season one.
In part one, Frank describes his fairytale rise to stardom. A random invitation got him playing with Johnstone Burgh, then a snub by Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld made him determined to succeed. St Mirren came calling, and after several impressive seasons he went south to join Luton, but ended up being signed by John Lyall for West Ham. Soon he was spearheading the Hammers attack with Tony Cottee, fed by the great Alan Devonshire.

In part two, David describes his exquisite pass to Steve Archibald for Scotland at Wembley in 1981, how Celtic got his signature despite his being a boyhood Rangers fan, and how his career was cut short by illness. There’s also content about fellow wingers Willie Henderson and Jimmy Johnstone, and brilliant stuff about the dodgy defeat by Real Madrid in the 1980 European Cup quarter-final.

Here's a special episode of Between the Lines, the podcast produced by BackPage, that tells the stories behind great sportswriting.
To celebrate the publication of Andriy Shevchenko's autobiography, My Life, My Football, we break down the story behind the book: why it took three years for the English language edition to reach bookstores, the significance of the war in Ukraine, what matters most to an elite footballer like Shevchenko when he tells his story, and what happens when you get two world-class strikers in the same room.
This episode features Martin and Neil from BackPage and the
Ballon d'Or of translation, Mark Palmer.
