A safety pin can protect the baby against evil spirits. Prolonged labour means she cheated on her husband. Swollen feet? She must be having a male child. Her age doesn’t matter as long as she is physically big enough to bear children.
These are just a few cultural beliefs that Dr. Babatunde Adewumi shared with us in this episode. Some of these beliefs are harmless, some are helpful, but most are dangerous and are contributing to Nigeria’s high maternal mortality ratio.

In the episode titled "Women dying to populate Nigeria" we spoke with Dr. Cecilia Banga who walked us through some of the most common complications that women face during pregnancy, and during and after delivery. She mentioned cesarean sections (c-sections) in the context of emergencies. Naturally, we wanted to know more about c-sections. This bonus content includes Dr. Banga's responses to our follow-up questions.

Every year, about 36,000 pregnant women die in Nigeria.
That's 100 pregnant women dying per day. Four pregnant women die every hour.
Nigeria, the Giant of Africa, has the highest maternal mortality in Africa. More women die during pregnancy, while giving birth, or after giving birth here in Nigeria than anywhere else in Africa.

It was enabled primarily by two factors: a strict definition of sexual respectability and new “technologies” that made it easier for blackmailers to stay anonymous. So while the sexual revolution has helped to reduce the cases of sexual blackmail in the West, in Africa the cases are rising thanks to the internet and digital technology.
