Last month, Plateau State, specifically Jos and about three local governments surrounding Jos had been under some kind of curfew since August 14th. The situation quickly escalated to the point where students had to be evacuated from the University of Jos (UniJos).
In this episode, we speak with Esther, a UniJos student who gives a firsthand account of what she experienced in the first 24 hours before she was evacuated.
Note: Esther is not the student’s actual name.

On the 24th of June, Chidinma Adaora Ojukwu was paraded in front of Nigerian journalists and at that time she confessed to killing Usifo Ataga in self-defense. About three weeks later, she said she had nothing to do with Mr. Ataga’s death. Same person, different version of events.
In this episode, we discuss why confessions are so powerful and how it’s possible to hack into a person’s mind in order to get a false confession.

On Sunday, August 15th, the world woke up to the news that Afghanistan is once again under the control of the Taliban. The US and other allied nations have been withdrawing troops from Afghanistan since February 2020 and analysts had predicted that the Taliban would probably take over at some point. But the speed at which it happened shocked just about everyone.
In this episode of The Backstory, we’ll remind you why the United States got into Afghanistan in the first place and how they found out, like the rest of us, that the Taliban is very much still a force to be reckoned with.

In October 2019, the FBI made an arrest in an airport somewhere in the US. That arrest led to the downfall of a popular Nigerian instagram influencer and now a highly decorated Nigerian police officer is fighting to save his reputation and career.
In today’s episode of The Backstory, we dig into the FBI’s court filings and uncover so much more to this story.

Right before taking their summer recess, the Nigerian Assembly decided to debate amendments to the Electoral Act. The act has 158 clauses and they considered each clause one by one. Everything was going well until they got to section 52 subsection 2. Then all hell broke loose.
What’s all the fuss about section 52 subsection 2? Find out this week on The Backstory podcast.

It’s been over 50 days since the Nigerian government suspended Twitter operations in the country. But, Nigeria is not the only country where Twitter is running into problems and on this week’s episode we invited Nikhil Pahwa from MediaNama, based in India, to share the experiences that the Indian government has been having with social media.
Though the inciting incidents around social media are somewhat similar between our two countries, our governments have reacted differently. Nigeria chose to ban Twitter while India is choosing to regulate them…for now.
So in this episode we ask: did the Nigerian government even have the option to regulate Twitter?

Last month (May 2021) the news was that Abubakar Shekau, leader of Boko Haram, is dead. He apparently was chased down by his rivals in the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) and asked to surrender. He chose to die. By suicide bomb.
Last week on the Backstory podcast, we began to trace the internal developments within the insurgent group that made this outcome unavoidable. This week we ask: what happens next?
