  • A (Useless) Year in Review Part II

    Send us Fan Mail

We’re back with Part 2 of our deep dive into the most useless cirriculum with the most valuable outcomes in schools today: music. This time, the Band Dads pick up where they left off, moving beyond marching season and into the concert, winter guard and percussion contest, and spring event stretch that closes out the school year. From winter concerts to final performances, they continue exploring the lessons, challenges, and unexpected wins that define a year in band.

    The big questions still apply:
     – What value did we get?
     – What lessons did we learn?
     – Can you learn something new doing the exact same thing you did the year before?
     – Does your grade level change the value you receive?
     – Who figures it out first—the kids or the parents?

Whether you're reflecting alongside your own band student or just trying to make sense of the organized chaos that is music education, this episode brings it all home with perspective, laughs, and some heartfelt moments.

Special thanks to the South Moore High School Bands for providing the fantastic custom introduction that kicks off this episode—what a way to start!

And to all the incredible Band Moms (and all moms everywhere): we wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you for everything you do.

  • A (Useless) Year in Review Part I

    Send us Fan Mail

As the school year wraps up, the Band Dads dive into a two-part reflection packed with insight, sarcasm, and heart. In Part 1, Scott makes a bold claim—music education might just be the most useless curriculum in school... and also the most valuable place your child can be. Confused? Perfect. That’s exactly where the conversation begins.

Part 1 focuses on the marching season, the Band Dads unpack the real takeaways from a year in band by exploring big questions like:
     – What value did we get?
     – What lessons did we learn?
     – Can you learn something new doing the exact same thing you did the year before?
     – Does your grade level change the value you receive?
     – Who figures it out first—the kids or the parents?

Whether you’re a band parent, student, educator, or just someone who loves a good deep dive with a side of dad humor, this episode kicks off a thoughtful look at what the year in music education really gave us.

A huge thank you to the Pride of Yukon Bands for their phenomenal custom intro—easily one of the highlights of the season!

  • Band Dads Mailbag # 4 / Episode 8 Tuesday Teaser

    Send us Fan Mail

In this mini episode, Scott opens up the mailbag to tackle a thoughtful and timely question: why are some school marching bands shifting away from competition and toward becoming showcase ensembles? He breaks down the many factors behind this trend—logistical, educational, financial, and cultural—proving it's not as simple as it may seem. Chris then shares some of the fantastic feedback the Band Dads have received from listeners over the past few weeks (thank you!), and the duo wraps things up with a teaser for Episode 8: A (Useless) Year in Review. That full episode drops May 12th and will take a reflective—and probably ridiculous—look back at the year in band.

Band Boosters – Cult or Comedy?

In this episode, Scott and Chris take a hilarious yet honest dive into the world of band booster organizations—comparing them (lightheartedly) to a cult... but don’t worry, in this case, cult stands for culture! Scott even memorizes and proudly repeats the official definition (more times than you'd expect!).

From pride and territorial instincts to the tricky art of navigating booster groups, the Band Dads explain why these dynamics exist—and why they're actually good for the program. Along the way, there's plenty of signature humor, real talk, and practical advice.

If you're a booster, a new band parent, or have a kid about to enter high school band—this is a must-listen! The sooner you get involved, the more rewarding the experience will be for you, your child, and your band family. Boosters: share this one far and wide!!

Band Dad Scott says this is his favorite, and the MOST important epiosde the Band Dad's have done so far!

    Who's in charge here?

In this episode, Band Dads Chris and Scott shine a spotlight on the real MVPs of every program—the Band Directors. Scott pulls back the curtain on what it takes just to become a band director, revealing that the path to a bachelor’s in music education rivals most master’s programs in workload. And once you're hired? You're basically the CEO of a small company at 22, responsible for more moving parts and student lives than anyone else on campus.

The dads also dive into how to best communicate with your band director (hint: find the “band director whisperer”), all while sprinkling in their signature Band Dad humor.

This episode features a special intro and outro courtesy of Band Director Jeff Heid and the Muscatine High School Band, proud home of the Mighty Muskie Marching Band—huge thanks to them for their contribution!

And yes—Band Dad Chris says this one’s his favorite episode yet!
