Last week, the State of Texas filed a complaint against the Meta company, alleging that Facebook "unlawfully captured the biometric identifiers of Texans for a commercial purpose without their informed consent...and that Facebook engaged in false, misleading, and deceptive acts." This, like several other cases we've seen this year, appears to be connected to renewed calls to data handling and privacy reforms for these companies.

The past few weeks, we've been talking a lot about the GDPR. But what is it? Today, I'm getting into what it is, and how it affects users - in the EU and out.

These past two weeks, Meta Platforms Inc. have repeatedly threatened to pull services such as Facebook and Instagram from the European Union over data handling concerns. The platform announced that if it could not continue sending EU user data to the US, it would “likely be unable to offer a number of our most significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe.”

In the second case in recent weeks around Google and the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), a German state court in Munich ruled last week that websites embedding Google Fonts violate the GDPR. Google Fonts is a font embedding service library. There are dozens of suits against Google's data handling, so we can expect more rulings in the months to come.
