  • Into the Mystic
The Summer of Love was coming to an ubrupt end. The dropout culture was beginning to unravel and those experimenting with the drug culture were seeking other sources of inspiration. The Beat Generation had spawned a counter culture that was diametrically opposed to the anger that was spilling from the government of the time so it is little wonder that people were turning from the hatred and looking inward. Many artists began turning to the East, finding comfort in the teachings of the mystics.
America was now the Mecca for the Beat Generation, and gurus from India were leaving their Ashrams to head over to the new country to spread their message of love and salvation through devotion rather than drugs. This week’s Beat Generation, we look at the influence the East had over the west and how the Beat Generation welcomed the Indian teachers with open arms.

  • The Age of Aquarius
It was 1965 and the summer of revolution was about to be replaced with the summer of love. The ideals passed on by the beat generation started to move away from protesting about the outward issues and started to look inward at ourselves. There was a spiritual revolution happening as the love generation began to take hold. It was the East finally merging with the west, the period of transcendental meditation, LSD, Free Love and the time that Timothy Leary became the new voice of the Beat Generation with his famous words. Turn On. Tune In. And Drop Out
Disillusioned with the protest era, artists like Bob Dylan and his message of revolution were being replaced with a much more peaceful way. Tune In to yourself. It was soon to become known as the Age of Aquarius.

  • Protest Songs of the 60's
The Beat Generation was an era of introduction into amazing ideas that challenged the core fabric of society. With authors like Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, the landscape started to change. Little did we know at the time that the Beat Generation would have an effect that would influence our musical, social and spiritual landscape from then until now and probably for many years to come.
It was post World War 2. The Vietnam War had just begun and along with changes in the political ideals people were starting to question their moral ideals as well.
The post war period also merged with the folk music scene, pioneered by artists like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, that lead to a young Bob Dylan to pave the way for The Beat Generation to influence the 1960’s popular counter-culture. This is the Beat Generation's look at the Protest Songs of the 60's
