  • Justice on Trial: Madlanga Commission puts SA’s failing system under the microscope

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Advocate Paul Pretorius SC, Senior Counsel at the Johannesburg Bar and former Chief Evidence Leader at the Zondo Commission, about the newly announced Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, tasked with investigating alleged deep-rooted dysfunction in South Africa’s law enforcement sector. With the terms of reference released by President Ramaphosa just yesterday, Pretorius weighs in on whether the commission can truly cut to the heart of systemic issues or if it risks becoming yet another political whitewash. They explore critical questions around the scope, urgency, and impact of the inquiry: Will its recommendations be taken seriously? Is there institutional will and capacity to act on them? Drawing on his experience with the Zondo Commission, Pretorius provides insight into what it takes for such a process to succeed in the face of entrenched resistance and political inertia.

  • Political Desk with Tshidi Madia: Kenny Kunene faces probe after being found at murder accused’s home

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Tshidi Madia, Associate Political Editor, as she brings sharp insight and political depth to another turbulent week in South African politics on The Political Desk. She unpacks the investigation into Kenny Kunene, found at the home of a murder accused, and questions whether this could damage his standing in Johannesburg or be another scandal he survives. They then examine President Ramaphosa’s suspension of Andrew Chauke, alleged to have enabled State Capture—probing whether this move is genuine accountability or political optics. Madia also reflects on the ousting of Nkabane and the entry of Buti Manamela into Higher Education, questioning if it's about performance or ANC factionalism. In her Politricking segment, she revisits her conversation with Helen Zille, drawing sharp contrasts between her governance vision and the current instability within the ANC.

  • Big shake-up in divorce law: Courts may soon override prenups

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Alison Botha-State law advisor in legislative development and implementation unit at  the department of Justice & constitutional development and Ceri von Ludwig, a family law attorney, about a major legal development that could transform divorce proceedings in South Africa. The proposed *General Laws (Family Matters) Amendment Bill* aims to give courts the power to override antenuptial contracts—particularly in marriages out of community of property without accrual—where one spouse may be left with nothing despite years of non-financial contribution. Sparked by real-life cases, such as those where COVID-19 disrupted careers and increased financial dependency, the bill seeks to promote fairness and close legal gaps that have disproportionately affected women. The reform also includes the long-overdue formal recognition of Muslim and customary marriages, signalling a significant modernization of South African family law.

  • US cuts blow to HIV fight: Clinics close as politics cloud health Aid

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Jens Pedersen, Director at the Africa First Advisory, about the far-reaching consequences of recent US funding cuts to HIV and TB programmes in Africa. For over 20 years, the PEPFAR initiative had bipartisan support and saved more than 25 million lives, including many in South Africa. However, in February, the Trump administration abruptly announced funding reductions that led to the closure of several clinics, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups such as adolescent girls, young women, sex workers, trans people, injecting drug users, and LGBTQ+ communities. While pregnant and breastfeeding mothers continue to receive support, others have been left behind. Following strong activist pushback, there has been a limited reprieve, but the future of critical HIV services remains uncertain as political agendas increasingly interfere with global health aid.
