  • Budget Brinkmanship: Will the GNU survive its first real test?

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Dr Musi Maimane, Chairperson of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Appropriations, as the Government of National Unity (GNU) faces its most critical moment yet: passing the national budget. The ANC has spent the past week scrambling for support, with the DA refusing to back the Appropriations Bill if it funds ANC ministers implicated in misconduct. In a high-stakes move, President Ramaphosa fired Minister Nkabane in an attempt to secure DA votes, but will it be enough? A failed budget would not only deal a blow to the GNU’s stability but could also halt funding for essential services like schools, hospitals, and public sector salaries.

  • The Africa Report: DR Congo, M23 rebels sign deal in Qatar to end fighting in Eastern Congo

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Africa Report Correspondent ,Crystal Orderson about two major developments on the continent. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, M23 rebels and the government have signed a declaration in Qatar aimed at ending the conflict in eastern Congo, an area long plagued by violence linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide. While the deal, brokered by Qatar and the US, marks progress, uncertainty remains over the withdrawal of M23 and Rwandan forces, with formal peace talks expected to begin on August 8. Meanwhile in Zimbabwe, Nelson Chamisa is making a political comeback by launching a new movement, deliberately not a party, to challenge ZANU-PF’s grip on power in the 2028 elections. Analysts are divided on whether this non-traditional approach can overcome Zimbabwe’s entrenched, military-backed political system.

  • Did the suspended Minister Senzo Mchunu iinterfere with investigations to protect his associates?

Bongani Bingwa speaks to political analyst Thobani Zikalala about the deepening scandal surrounding suspended minister Senzo Mchunu, who’s been placed on special leave amid explosive allegations of interfering in criminal investigations to shield allies. The claims, raised by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, have led to a string of arrests, some involving individuals named directly by the commissioner. With pressure mounting, President Ramaphosa has set up a Commission of Inquiry to probe the matter, while Parliament's portfolio committee on justice is pushing for an ad hoc committee to investigate. Will this inquiry get to the truth and do so before further damage is done?

  • President suspends South Gauteng DPP Andrew Chauke

Bongani Bingwa speaks to The Money Show presenter Stephen Grootes about a long-awaited move at the heart of South Africa’s justice system. President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Andrew Chauke, after years of mounting pressure and serious allegations of misconduct. In 2023, journalist Karyn Maughan reported that Chauke was finally under scrutiny after more than a decade of concern, particularly for his alleged mishandling of high-profile corruption cases. Almost two years ago, National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi wrote to the president, formally requesting an inquiry into his fitness to hold office. So, why has it taken so long for action to be taken? And what exactly is Chauke being investigated for? Stephen Grootes breaks it down and explores what this means for the NPA’s credibility and the broader fight against corruption.

  • Zama Zamas wage war on Joburg’s power grid, City Power calls it sabotage

Bongani Bingwa speaks to City Power Chief Operations Officer Charles Tlouane as Johannesburg battles a relentless assault on its electricity infrastructure. Armed zama zamas are no longer just mining illegally—they’re tearing copper cables from underground tunnels, triggering fires beneath highways and blackouts across Braamfontein, Parktown, and Newtown. City Power says this isn’t petty theft—it’s coordinated sabotage. With over 170 arrests already this year, the crisis continues. Streets are closing, damage is skyrocketing, and City Power admits they’re being outmanned and outgunned. So, who’s really running Joburg’s power grid? And when, if ever, will the lights stay on?
