Ryan is back for Christmas week to review the UPtv Christmas musical, The Best Thing About Christmas.

This faith-based musical follows the story of overcoming hardship through community, family, and the magic of Christmas. With uplifting moments, heartfelt performances, and original music, it’s a celebration of hope, love, and meaningful connections during the holiday season.

The movie kicks off with Dylan playing a tune for his wife, Kara, while she folds laundry. He keeps singing, “I’m gonna make you romantic,” and she starts singing along with him. Dylan is an aspiring musician, even though he’s definitely getting a bit too old for this, especially with four kids — including 18-year-old Molly, who is also an aspiring musician.

Molly goes with her dad to one of his gigs, where a record executive notices them and ends up signing them to a record label! Off to Nashville they go, despite Kara being really hesitant about the idea. But Dylan is the man of the house, and he makes the rules.

On Christmas Eve, Dylan gets devastating news — Molly has been killed in a car crash. Dylan spends the next part of the movie acting like a bit of a dirtbag. The record label woman tries to make a move on him, and he realizes how much he’s been screwing things up. In frustration, he smashes his guitar on the ground.

He visits Molly’s gravesite and has a heartfelt conversation with the pastor. Afterward, he apologizes to Kara and the rest of his family. He decides to hold a fundraiser in Molly’s honor, encouraging everyone to bring warm clothes to donate — something Molly was very passionate about.

The fundraiser is a smash hit. Dylan brings out Mark Wills and his youngest daughter to perform a song that he and Molly were working on before she passed, The Best Thing About Christmas. The family ends the night by putting up the Christmas tree together, happy and united.
