One of the biggest charges levied against Christianity is the hypocrisy of many of its followers. There’s a laundry list of bad names and bad history associated with Christianity - people who have taken advantage of others and used religion to do so.

 

So what does Jesus have to say about all this? You might be surprised to find that Jesus called out hypocrites and self-righteous people A LOT. So, if you’ve ever taken issue with Christianity because of hypocrisy that you’ve seen, just know Jesus feels you on that. He took major issue with hypocritical religious leaders of his day. His critique of hypocrites posing as religious leaders is more like a diss track than it is a Sunday School Class.

A popular take on faith in culture today is that it's ok to maintain your personal beliefs as long as you keep it relegated to your private sphere of life. That's a nice theory, but somebody let the guy who came up with that idea know that The Bible is Dope Podcast guys say - it doesn't work at all! What you believe matters and it directly affects the way you live your life and interact with others.

 

That's what's so interesting about the teachings of Jesus. He makes a case about who God is and who we are, and then he says it all comes down to whether or not we believe in Him. He doesn't say that eternity hinges on your good deeds, your rituals, your status, etc. He says it's all a matter of belief. Here's the flip side too: you can say you believe in whatever, but your lifestyle and behavior eventually proves what your ultimately believe.

The Bible is the most scrutinized and criticized book in the world, no cap. Here are some common critiques of the Bible in modern public thought:

Where did the Bible come from?

Who wrote the Bible?

Can we trust the translations?

How do we know it hasn’t been corrupted?

These are good questions - and the surprising thing is, they have some pretty interesting answers that might shock you. We brought our seminary friend, Mario Perez Jr. on the show to talk about the historical background of the Bible, where the translations came from and why you can trust them. Mario is a seminary student at Calvin Theological Seminary and serves as a Youth Pastor in Redlands, CA.

Classic shot against the Bible: : "I can't accept a God who would judge people. I believe in a God of love." That's a hot take. What if it's off base though? What if it's unlivable? What if we actually need both a God who is love and the judge?

 

In the Bible, Jesus talks about how He is both the Savior and the Judge. He presents us with this interesting tension: God is love, and God is just. Jesus has more to him than you think. Taking a closer look at who Jesus was and what He came to earth to do could change the way you look at your relationships and the world around you.

John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life..."

 

I bet you've heard this verse. I bet you haven't thought about what comes next, though...

 

"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God."

 

So, everybody knows the God so loved the world part. A lot of people don't know the breakdown after though. It's true, the Bible says that God is a God of love. However, when it talks about Jesus and why He came into the world, it wasn't all for the sake of peace, love and positivity. It's a little more hype than that. The stakes are a little higher. The Bible says that Jesus came to the world calling people to believe in Him with an ultimatum: believe and live forever, reject Him and find condemnation.

 

Sheesh.

 

You probably hear the word, "faith" often. But what does it mean? John 3:16 breaks it down for you. According to this passage, you lock in the right type of faith and you get eternal life - no cap!

Part 3 in a series called, Jesus Piece: a conversation on the person of Jesus as presented in the Bible, why he matters and why his teachings are so compelling for the 21st century.

 

We talk about God a lot nowadays. In the western world you can find plenty of examples where leaders attach "God" to their agenda. You might see this in politics, you might see this when people try to justify their decision making, or worse, you might even see this when people try to control others.

 

But what if God has an agenda of His own? And what if His agenda goes against our preferences and plans? In Jesus' life, his followers and fans had plenty of expectations and hopes of Him. His disciples in particular saw him as a figure to lead them out of their current life situation, and when Jesus made it clear He had a greater mission than simply adjusting the here and now...things got awkward.

 

The crazy thing is the experience of the disciples is ours today. We create our own version of God based on our preferences and expectations. Maybe we're missing out on truly experiencing God because we're trying to fit Him in our box. Here's the thing: Jesus doesn't fit in boxes. What you don't know but need to know about this Bible is that...every character is flawed. The Bible presents the story of a fallen humanity with God reaching down into the world to save them. A lot of people throw criticisms toward the Bible that say things like, it's a book that co-signs behavior that is inappropriate. In reality however, the Bible in many cases is more of a story then it is a syllabus on how to live your life, and these stories depict characters - much like us who are selfish, prideful, wayward - flawed. There is this one character, though...who follows God's laws, who lives out the human ideals and sets an example for how to live that's hard to ignore.

 

Jesus. In this series we're going to get into who the Bible says He was and why He is the answer our world is seeking in the 21st century.
