The Big Show

Friday's First Hour: To start the show, we head to Indianapolis with Lydia Johnson with coverage of the National FFA Convention & Expo courtesy of Sinclair Tractor. She talks with members of the Sigourney FFA Chapter about the big things they enjoyed seeing and are still looking forward to. Eastern Iowa field agronomist Virgil Schmitt from Iowa State University Extension tells us about harvest and the last few fields remaining in that area. He also talks about river levels on the Mississippi. At the Big Show Garage, Bob Quinn is talking with the folks from Titan Tire including Scott Sloan with a recap of last month's Ride For A Cure event and talking about the upcoming farm show in Germany. To end the hour, it's back to Indy with Lydia as she talks with Iowa FFA President Holly Schmitt.

Thursday's Second Hour: We continue from our Clean Water in Iowa celebration from Dan Voss' farm in Palo, IA near Cedar Rapids. The hour begins with Bob Quinn talking to Dan about the process of participating in a "batch and build" project for installing clean water practices. He also talks to the Iowa Soybean Associations Evan Brehm about the positives of using clean water practices. Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Regional Basin Coordinator James Martin gives us some broader context on how local farm runoff impacts waterway beyond Iowa and has info on cost-share options. The show ends with another update from Lydia Johnson at the National FF Convention & Expo in Indianapolis brought to you by Sinclair Tractor. She speaks with Breanna Wetzler and Ella Peterson from Iowa State University talking about the big selling points of attending the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for the FFA Students they are talking to at the Expo.

Thursday's First Hour: Clean Water in Iowa starts in Palo, IA today and Bob is at the farm of Dan Voss! He is joined to start the show by Voss talking about his bioreactor, the decision to install it, and about the waterways he is working to keep clean because of it. Sean McMahon from the Iowa Ag Water Alliance tells us about the success of the "Batch and Build" model in Iowa. Justin Schroeder, Environmental Manager for the City of Cedar Rapids, tells us why it's such a big deal to them as they break ground on the batch and build project in the Cedar River watershed. And Allison Bishop from Hertz Farm Management discusses how they work with landowners in adding water quality projects on their farm. To end the hour, we send it to Indianapolis with Lydia Johnson as she covers the National FFA Convention & Expo for us courtesy of Sinclair Tractor! She chats with Lincoln Electric's Rachel Blankenship about the technology training they are showing students at the Expo.

Wednesday's Second Hour: To begin the hour Dragotec President Denny Bollig talks with Bob about the stalk roller on their corn heads and how it decreases yield loss. We hear from Lydia Johnson again at the National FFA Convention & Expo courtesy of Sinclair Tractor. She chats with National Chorus member Aaron Lee from LeMars, IA about his experience singing the National Anthem at Sunday's Colts game and some of their other performances this week. We take a gaze at the charts of Al Kluis of Kluis Commodity Advisors for grain markets as corn continues to fade a bit lower today.

Wednesday's First Hour: The 96th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis is under way! Lydia Johnson is on the ground with reports courtesy of Sinclair Tractor! To begin the show, she talks with Iowa FFA State Officers Collin Bauer and Will Valseck about what they look forward to seeing this week and about the committees they are participating in. Iowa State University Extension field agronomist Gentry Sorenson in North-Central Iowa tells us what's left for harvest in that area and talks about issues with waterhemp and new traits they're seeing. And it's Wyffels Wednesday today as Bob Quinn catches up with Wyffels District Sales Manager Ben Kuhl talking harvest and 2024 prep and decisions.

Tuesday's Second Hour: Mike Naig begins the hour with us updating us on the status of highly pathogenic avian influenza across the upper Midwest and best practices for prevention. Des Moines County corn grower Dan Keitzer tells us about the field conditions and moisture levels he's seeing in Southeast Iowa. Wrapping up with U.S. Commodities' Don Roose we look at where he sees markets moving in the next few weeks.

Tuesday's First Hour: Iowa State University Extension field agronomist Meaghan Anderson tells us what she is seeing in central Iowa for fall field work and notes that the area is better off than a lot of the state for soil moisture. Don Roose from U.S. Commodities talks over the markets with us as he says corn is stuck where it is until there is a catalyst like South American weather to cause movement. At the end of the hour, we hear more of David's conversation with Kenya's Kenneth "Dr. Fun" Monjero from World Food Prize last week about getting youth excited about food production.

Monday's Second Hour: We listen in on the remainder of David Geiger's conversations from last week at the 2023 Borlaug Dialogue. To begin the hour, he is joined by Colombian farmer Jose Luis Gonzalez Chacon to learn about his operation and some of the unique challenges he faces. Grow Further Founder and Chairman Peter Kelly tells us about the research they are undertaking to expand crop production globally. David also talks with Kenneth "Dr. Fun" Monjero about getting the world's youth involved in ag. Paragon Investments' Jamey Kohake wrap up the day with an update on markets as corn and soybeans continue to drift downward.

Monday's First Hour: We listen in on one of David's conversations from last week at the World Food Prize with two delegates from Azerbaijan about their involvement in the event and the issue of landmines in agricultural areas against international law. Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist Leah TenNapel in the Northwest corner of Iowa tells us what snow they got over the weekend and how it is impacting soil moisture. Jamey Kohake from Paragon Investments' digs into today's markets with corn and soybeans moving lower. Tim Meyer from the Steffes Group tells us about the strength of the used equipment market and where he sees it heading.

Friday's Second Hour: Bob is continuing today's Farming for Your Future Friday with the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers and the Iowa Corn Growers Association. ICGA Vice President of Market Development Ryan Sauer talks about the markets globally they are looking to expand to drive demand for Iowa Corn. CSIF's Brian Waddingham tells us more about being prepared for the future on your livestock farm and how the Coalition can help. ICGA District 1 Director Mike Ver Steeg talks about his experience with CISF in helping to put up a pig barn. Paragon Investments' Jamey Kohake is our closing act with a look at today's markets.
