Welcome back to season 3. In This week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, we talk about how Holding Old Mental Models of Each Other Damages Relationships. When people see you for who you used to be, especially our families since they are the people we’ve been around for a long time we tend to drift apart and move from them.
For instance, I had a conversation with my mom who always held me as a shy and reserved kind of person, and she kept repeating that I used to be shy and timid even after having a conversation that I have never been so.
When such a thing happens it tends to limit the closeness we have with these people because they are so hung up on holding these old models and they can’t see the growth. Seeing a person for who they used to be tends to make the subject feel lonely and frustrated.
People will oftentimes see you for who you used to be even when you are growing, you ought to have a conversation with them and call out what you feel like and what’s going on, especially with the people you think it’s worth keeping. Just like everything, repetition is important to make the conversation sink into their mind.
It’s understandable that people take time to realize that you have moved from what you were to who you are at the moment, so have compassion and patience because they are also dealing with their past traumas. Some people wouldn’t want to see you move past who they used to see you because of their own insecurities.
It’s important to find a community of people who see you for who you are in the present moment. The question is “Who are you holding in the old mental model despite them showing you and telling you that they’ve changed?” “What’s the source of holding others to their old beliefs?” “ Are you willing to move past seeing them according to the old mental model?” Remember, holding the old mental model of others tends to damage our relationship with others since it strains the subject from having conversations with you.
Despite what most people realize, it’s the unconscious mind that runs us. But how is that so? Get your first primer in 20 minutes! Follow and Share these pearls with others.
