This episode was recorded back in September 2019, when Kat was joined on location by our NYC co-host, writer and mental health professional Pallavi Yetur. We were very excited to interview 90210 superfan, author Erin Khar, whose memoir Strung Out: One Last Hit and Other Lies That Nearly Killed Me, debuted recently to great acclaim. Check out her Ravishly advice column “Ask Erin,” and the article that first brought her to our attention: “I Learned Everything About Relationships From Watching Beverly Hills, 90210.”

We’re joined this week by a member of The Blaze family, Kim Hoffman—who’s joined us as a guest many times over the years—to discuss the 21st episode of Beverly Hills, 90210’s fifth season, “Stormy Weather.” Discussed in this episode:

And we’re back to our episode-by-episode dissection of season five of Beverly Hills, 90210! This week, Kat’s joined by illustrator Ethan Harper, a pop culture savant with a special affinity for Twin Peaks. Join the pair as they dive into a series of Valentine’s Day misadventures for the gang at Cal U, as the Peach Pit After Dark hosts a telethon for pediatric heart health, Ray is tempted to cheat on Donna with Val, and Kelly’s sucked further into the grasp of Professor Finley and the New Evolution.

We’re back for a topical check-in before resuming our regularly-scheduled episodes as we recap the rest of Beverly Hills, 90210 season five! The world has entered into the confusing new reality of a global pandemic, and we’re catching up from our respective homes as we hypothesize about how the original series might have tackled a very special topic such as Coronavirus, and what it would mean for our favorite characters. Then, we run through the latest updates from the 90210 cast members as they’re adjusting to life in quarantine.
We’re excited to bring you some levity in this strange time, and want to be clear that a bit of tabloid gossip and joking doesn’t detract from the seriousness of this situation. We’re incredibly grateful to our listeners who work at medical facilities, grocery stores, in food delivery or public transit, first responders, and all who are keeping society running at a risky time. We’ll continue to follow all of the recommended best practices for containing the spread of this virus, and urge our listeners to do the same!

We’re checking in with an update since we announced our brief mid-season hiatus a few weeks back. Kat’s dad passed away, and she has been so touched by everyone’s messages of support and sympathy. Lizzie and Kat take the opportunity to share some memories of Phil’s support of the podcast and related 90210 concerns (mostly Ian Ziering), read his “IMDb bio,” and thank our listeners for the patience until new episodes of the podcast are back. We also bring you some updates from “90210 in the news,” and re-run our interview with one of the series’ most iconic dads, Matthew Laurance!
In memory of Kat’s dad, her family welcomes donations to the Malala Fund.
Discussed in this episode are Kat’s reviews of the Best Picture Oscar nominees (addendum), and:

This episode is double the fun, so we had to break it up into two parts! Last week we dropped the first half of our conversation with Cullen Callaghan of the Gleeboot podcast, which focuses on teen soaps, the Luke Perry memorial episode of Riverdale, and Glee. This week we work through the season five Beverly Hills, 90210 episode “Little Monsters.” Discussed on this episode: Gerald McCullouch’s Twitter bio, Cullen’s alter-ego Ya Boi Ryan, Cory Monteith's final tweets, and this baffling screengrab:

This episode is double the fun, so we had to break it up into two parts! This week, listen to the first half of our conversation with Cullen Callaghan of the Gleeboot podcast. We dive deep into teen soaps, the Luke Perry memorial episode of Riverdale, conspiracy theories, musicals, and 90210’s parallels to Glee (thanks to Wilde Rebellion on Tumblr). Part II is where we examine the season five episode of Beverly Hills, 90210, “Little Monsters.” That part will drop next week, unless you support the show on Patreon at the “Les Wildcats” level or above, where you can listen to it right away! Discussed on this episode: the time Kat provided the improv prompt for a "Quick & Funny Musicals" take on Into the Woods at UCB, a relevant tweet or two combining Glee and Lizzo.

Kat and East Coast co-host Pallavi Yetur were joined by Patreon supporter Shelly Myers and her husband Loggins to break down Beverly Hills, 90210 season 5, episode 18 “Hazardous to Your Health.” Sadly, their cat Brandon Walsh (“In temperament, he’s really more of a Steve Sanders.”) couldn’t be there. While Val and Dylan have a Mexican caper, Kelly and Brandon’s future is in the balance (depending on whether or not Professor Finley can be tenured). Discussed in this episode: hacking on-screen in the “Dilemma” music video, Swordfish, and NCIS. Click here to listen to Pallavi’s previous episodes of The Blaze!

Live, from New York (kinda)! While in NYC, Kat was joined by East Coast co-host Pallavi Yetur and guest Jarod Hector to discuss season five, episode 17 of Beverly Hills, 90210, “Sweating It Out.” Between manual labor and a spiritual sweat session on an Indian reservation, and a full weekend seminar with The New Evolution, this episode has it all. Discussed in this show: Pallavi’s article about Brendan Fraser and The Mummy, the podcast “This Land,” and tragedy at James Arthur Ray’s sweat lodge retreat. Listen to Pallavi and Jarod’s previous episodes of The Blaze!
