The Penn State Nittany Lions Football team watched with the rest of the country as Ohio State was crowned the College Football National Champions on Monday night. The Buckeyes defeated Notre Dame 34-23 in Atlanta to secure the championship in a game that Ohio State dominated after the opening scoring drive from the Fighting Irish. Now that the season has finally ended, we're looking ahead to 2025. What does Penn State need from its roster to get back to the Playoff in next fall? We'll be counting down the top five position battles that need to play out for the upcoming season.

The National Championship from Penn State's perspective

Penn State gets more roster news for 2025

Before we dive headfirst into recruiting, there's more roster information to discuss regarding the return of Dom DeLuca and JB Nelson for the upcoming season. What does their return do for the roster in 2025? Can Penn State keep all of the offensive linemen it has on the roster happy?

Next, we'll dive into the recent news with Big Ten foe Rutgers. Penn State lost a recruiting battle for three-star athlete Elias Coke on Wednesday to the Scarlet Knights and the next day a former Nittany Lion chose them as his transfer destination. We'll recap the flurry of activity around the program since our last live conversation on the Blue White Illustrated Live Show yesterday. Reporter Greg Pickel joins the show to discuss what he's been following, including the deal Tom Allen signed to join the Clemson staff as defensive coordinator, NFL Draft decisions from Sal Wormley, Kobe King, Nick Dawkins, and others.

Penn State receiver room reset

The biggest news from Tuesday afternoon and evening was the departure of the team's top two receivers from the 2024 season. Omari Evans and Trey Wallace will both enter the transfer portal to seek a new home for their remaining time in college football. 

What's the impact of those moves? We'll discuss the portal exodus from the Penn State wide receiver room and the work Marques Hagans has done at the position, and we'll review the work the team did in the portal this offseason. 

Of course, we'll discuss what the team needs from the group in 2025 to raise the production bar from the offense. 

NFL Draft decisions

Several other veterans made decisions about their future on Tuesday. We'll discuss the impact of losing Sal Wormley and retaining Nick Dawkins, as well as how Smith Vilbert continues a trend on the defensive line for the Penn State defense. 

Of course, the biggest news was the decision of middle linebacker Kobe King to leave for the NFL. How does the team replace King? We'll discuss the names that fans need to know heading into spring football in March and April. 

Penn State target makes his decision

Finally, Harrisburg athlete Elias Coke will choose his college destination sometime during the show. If that happens, we'll react to his decision and discuss the impact of gaining his commitment or missing out on the versatile athlete. 

Coke is yet another player from a loaded Harrisburg team, including Kevin Brown and Messiah Mickens, who have either chosen or are considering the Nittany Lions. Mickens and Brown are both high-four stars and top-100 players in the Class of 2026.

The Latest Penn State Roster Moves After Furious Weekend

The Penn State Nittany Lions came up short in the Orange Bowl, falling to Notre Dame and ending the team's 2024 season. Despite a strong start, the team failed to capitalize on the lead, giving it up in the fourth quarter and, ultimately, losing. Penn State dominates the trenches but gives up big plays

Penn State's offense got the ball rolling early by generating chunk plays on the ground. The team had 194 yards of offense in the first half and 141 of those came on the ground. The Lions put together two long scoring drives to control the flow. 

However, the star of the game in the trenches was injured star Abdul Carter. The pass rusher lined up opposite of his normal position to play with his good shoulder to the inside of the line. He tallied a sack and two TFLs in the first half. 

But it wasn't enough. The Penn State offense went silent in the third quarter, with just 25 total yards to Notre Dame's 128. Notre Dame took the lead in the early fourth quarter with a Jerimiyah Love scoring from inside the five yard line. 

Penn State bounced back with a scoring drive of its own, but the Irish continued to churn yards on the ground and mix in passes from quarterback Riley Leonard. Despite two interceptions, Leonard threw a touchdown over Cam Miller, who fell over in coverage, allowing a late fourth-quarter score and a field goal drive to lose the game after the Penn State offense went three and out with four minutes left. 

Postgame content

Penn State's best player's status up in the air 

Penn State head coach James Franklin provided some insight into Abdul Carter's status heading into the game against Notre Dame after suffering an upper body injury against Boise State last week. 

"At this point, I don't think there's anything that is stopping him from playing. But it's just -- it's going to come down to, you know, how is he able to play," Franklin said.  

We'll discuss the situation in further detail and try to read between the lines. We'll also discuss Carter's status at practice on Sunday to give more details and context to the situation. 

Fitz's Recruiting udpate

We'll also briefly pause the game conversation to discuss the latest recruiting information and news from the team-building aspects of Penn State football. The Penn State Football team defeated Boise State on New Year's Eve in the Fiesta Bowl and advanced to the Semifinals in the College Football Playoff. The team will play either Georgia or Notre Dame, which will be decided on Jan 2. at 4 pm. The game was delayed by the terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Years Day. Today, we'll start with the grim situation and discuss what we know about the general plan for the College Football Playoff, and then discuss Penn State's win.

Penn State runs over Boise State defense

After the game, Penn State head coach James Franklin expounded on how his running backs played when asked what made them so gret. 

"That's Kaytron. Kaytron breaks tackles. He runs people over. He's a physical, physical back. Nick, obviously, if you give him a crease, he has got a chance to go 80 at any minute. So, they're really good complementary backs. They've been playing together for a long time. When we're able to get the outside zone going like we were able to do today, kind of opens everything else up and gets people running sideline to sideline, which creates creases," Franklin said. 

We'll discuss the outcome of Penn State's win, and what happened on offense to slow down the team's hot start. 

Defense dominates 

Next, we'll discuss the team's defensive performance which kept superstar running back Ashton Jeanty. We'll discuss the ways that Penn State went about putting an emphasis on stopping Jenaty and how effective it was. 

We'll also discuss what the team gave up to do so. Quarterback Maddux Madsen threw for over 300 yards in the game and kept the Boise State offense churning plays and drives. 

Mixed into all of that is the injury to Abdul Carter. How did that affect the game plan, and what will happen next for the Nittany Lions? We'll discuss the somewhat dire situation on the defensive line with the depth heading into a showdown against two teams with strong running games.

The Penn State Nittany Lions advanced to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff on New Year's Eve with a victory over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. We'll discuss the win and the meaning it holds for the program on the Labatt Postgame Show. Join Penn State football expert Sean Fitz as we discuss the biggest moments from the game and the things that ended up deciding the victory. Penn State gets the job done

It wasn't perfect, but Penn State dominated Boise State in enough facets of the game to get the win. The Lions did what most thought was impossible and kept Ashton Jeanty contained for the entirety of the Fiesta Bowl. The superstar tailback managed only 96 yards on 24 carries before Penn State put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. The team did it without star linebacker Abdul Carter, who went down with a shoulder injury in the first quarter and did not return. Overall, the team racked up eight tackles for loss to keep Jeanty contained before he got going.

Offensively, Penn State used another strong game from Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton to power the win. Allen was his typical gritty self, grinding out 15 carries for 131 yards. Singleton contributed a 58-yard touchdown to seal the game.
