The Bogus Otis Show: 9 Degrees of Sammy Hagar

Kick-off those worn-out shoes, let your hair down and pour yourself some lite roast, because the Bo-Hosts welcome you to: Sammy Sunday Mornings!

The "BONUS OTIS" mini-episodes are bite-sized and focus on the mellower side of the RedRocker's catalog!

In this episode, the Bo-Hosts turn the DeLorean towards 2011's epic Zeppelin-esque "Something Going Wrong".  While Chickenfoot's follow-up album rocked, this foreboding tune is chill and can be classified as a Sammy Sunday Mornings track!

Is "III" even better than Chickenfoot's killer-no-filler 2009 debut? Possibly. It's hard to say, but this album's closer evokes some very reflective lyrics and some very deep thoughts, for a Sunday. Could it also be the sibling-song to Balance's "Feelin"?

Possibly!! To find out, pour yourself a coffee, put your feet up and join the Bo-Hosts for another lazy, hazy, Sammy Sunday!

"It's not who you are its how you dress!" In this episode, the Bo-Hosts revisit the fun and the fashion of the 5150 era!  1986 was a pivotal year as Sammy started his mega-successful run fronting Van Halen. Pink parachute pants, yellow watches, white teeth and RED guitars permeated 5150's tour book. The band arguably sounded a bit different, but they also looked a bit different as the back half of the 80's unfolded. The fun matched the fury and the clothes were as loud as the guitars during the heights of Yuppie" culture, consumerism, and the aggressive musical pursuit of wealth!

So grab your 5150 tour book (if you can still find one) as the Bo-Hosts reminisce over one of the most colourful decades, and colourful moments, in Van Halen's history.

The "BONUS OTIS" mini-episodes are bite-size and focus on the mellower side of the RedRocker's catalog!

In this episode, the Bo-Hosts chill out and reflect on Sammy's 1979 classic cover of Otis Redding's  "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay".  This soulful rendition definitely qualifies as a Sammy Sunday Mornings track!

Sammy has stated many times how much soul music has inspired him, and he definitely delivers soul on this laid-back track that could be the sibling-song to his Staples Singers cover of "I'll Take you There" which became "Let Me Take You There".

So pour yourself a coffee, put your feet up and grab a seat on the dock for another lazy, hazy, Sammy Sunday!

The "BONUS OTIS" mini-episodes are bite-size and focus on the mellower side of the RedRocker's catalog!

As the Bo-Hosts continue the 5150 @ 40 celebrations, they reflect back on "Dreams", from 2014's Sammy's acoustic-centric "Lite Roast".

In this episode the Bo-Host ponder if "Dreams" is the most inspiring rock song ever recorded, and is Sammy's soaring lyric on the album version @ approx. 3:30 his greatest performance ever?

Hellllooooo Baaaaa- BAY! Come take a trip down memory lane as the Bo-Hosts celebrate "5150 Month" by deep-diving into the 1986 Van Halen masterpiece that defined an exciting new era for the band! It's practically the reason The Bogus Otis Show exists!

In this episode Brent and Darin reflect on the massive commercial success of 5150—Van Halen’s first #1 album—and share personal "origin stories" of where they were when they first heard it. From bedroom guitar practice with Sears-brand gear to Friday nights at the mall, the conversation explores why this album remains a timeless staple of rock history.

Also discussed is The "Van Hagar" Pivot: the transition from the Roth era to Sammy Hagar, noting how the band moved toward a more melodic, "pop-inflected" rock sound, Live Without a Net: the iconic 1986 concert video, describing the band’s performance as an "aerobics class" led by "superheroes" who made technical mastery look effortless, and a spirited debate on the album’s best songs, highlighting the title track "5150" as "captured lightning in a bottle" and defending the experimental, light-hearted nature of the closing track, "Inside."

In this most epic of episodes, prolific Canadian music journalist, author, and historian Martin Popoff returns to The Bogus Otis Show to celebrate the 40th anniversary of 5150.

Often referred to as the "wise swami" of hard rock, Martin pulls no punches. He labels fan-favourites like "Best of Both Worlds" as "undercooked jams," yet simultaneously argues the album is the "ultimate manifestation of the legendary Van Halen Brown Sound."

1986 was a pivotal year; while the world was torn between the rise of Thrash and the explosion of Hair Metal, Van Halen was busy inventing a new sonic reality. Now, four decades later, the question remains: is 5150 the masterpiece the Bo-Hosts proclaim it to be, or is it—as Martin suggests—the victim of "cocaine-fueled" jamming?

Either way, this episode is a "Ruby Red" Anniversary deep dive into Van Halen’s debut with the Red Rocker.

So tune-in, "Get Up" as the trio goes "Inside"  5150 to dissect the most transformative year in the careers of both Sammy Hagar and Van Halen!

The "BONUS OTIS" mini-episodes are bite-size and focus on the mellower side of the RedRocker's catalog!

As the Bo-Hosts continue the 5150 @ 40 celebrations, they reflect back to Sammy and Eddie's 1993 appearance at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit concert where they played  "Love Walks In".  This soulful rendition was just piano and vocal, which definitely qualifies it as a Sammy Sunday Mornings track!

Sammy has stated many times that this soulful tune was written about Aliens; a very specific topic he firmly believes in. As a metaphor for love, or for making a deep connection with someone- or something - it raises the question: do Aliens really exist? Are you a believer like Sammy is? The Bo-Hosts each share their opinions on this, and one of the Bo-Hosts reveals they've been visited! ( cue Twilight Zone theme )

What happens when a high-school kid from a rough ( New Halen ) Connecticut neighbourhood swaps sucker-punches for squats? He becomes an icon on one of rock’ and roll's most legendary album covers!

In this high-reps episode, The Bo-Hosts are joined by fitness professional and author Rick Valente—the man literally carrying the weight of the world on Van Halen’s 5150 album cover. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of this landmark album, Rick reminisces on the 1986 casting call at Gold’s Gym and the 2-day photoshoot with Eddie and Alex!

Rick also discusses his new book, My Life’s Ride,  how bodybuilding saved him from a path of drugs & violence, his epic 10-year run on ESPN's BodyShaping helping people find their own path to health, and why he believes training your mind is just as important as training your body.

All that, plus, as the Bo-Hosts dive into Rick’s star-studded life they somehow manage to bond over the late, great Gregory Hines—because nothing says "Sammy Hagar Podcast" like an unexpected detour into the world of legendary tap dancers!

The "BONUS OTIS" mini-episodes are bite-size and focus on the mellower side of the RedRocker's catalog!

In this episode, the Bo-Hosts go head-to-head over "Not Enough," the piano ballad from Van Halen’s 1995 album, Balance.  While Bo-Host Brent feels this track hits harder than "When It’s Love" and gets goosebumps from the song's soaring sonics of the production, Bo-Host Darin feels like its from the "Bizarro World" version of VH and argues the band traded their signature "tanned & rowdy" party smiles for a morose vibe that feels more like Van Folds Five than Van Halen.

Was the song actually a subconscious plea from Sammy to Eddie as the band began to fracture? Is there any irony in that the music video was filmed on the very same rooftop the Beatles split-up on? Is it the perfect bookend to 5150's barnburner opener?

Grab your headphones and decide for yourself: Is the sone "Good Enough" to be a Sammy-era classic, or have you had enough of "Not Enough"?

So sit down, pour a coffee, put your feet up and enjoy another lazy, hazy, Sammy Sunday!
