Today we welcome to the BRAND New You show Lieutenant Colonel Tommy Stoner from the Unites States Army.

Lieutenant Colonel Stoner started his military career as an enlisted soldier at the age of 17.

Since that time he has held various positions of increasing responsibility including serving in the 82nd airborne, the Army Rangers and the Army Special Forces.

At every level, Lieutenant Colonel Stoner has held leadership positions including his last position as a Special Forces Battalion Commander.

In this role, he was responsible for 500+ special forces personnel as well as an 1100 person special operations task force.

After 28 years of active military service, Lieutenant Colonel Stoner is currently in transition and preparing not only for his retirement from the United States Army but also for his transition to the civilian workforce as well.

ATTITUDE AND EMPLOYMENT SECURITY

Richards starts his book by discussing the important of attitude not just in your job search but in your life. Your attitude is always on display for everyone to see even in places that never occurred to you to look.

When was the last time you checked the message you left on your voicemail? Richard tells you why you need to check it and maybe update it.

To say there has been a shift in employment over the last few years would be a huge understatement. We used to think about job security now we need to consider employment security.

Employment security is all about you becoming the CEO of You, Inc. You need to be vigilant about the changing career landscape and required skills in order to develop transferable skills and knowledge that other employers will want and need.

Employment security keeps you relevant and will help you weather the economic storms that will happen throughout your career.

We discuss job hopping and I ask Richard how long is too long to stay with one employer. You can either hand around in abad situation and wait for something to happen to you or you can be more proactive and look for an opportunity elsewhere.

REINVENTING YOU - DEFINE YOUR BRAND | IMAGINE YOU FUTURE

In 2010, Dorie wrote a post for the Harvard Business Review titled, “How to reinvent your personal brand”. The post went “viral” and Dorie was able to use it as a springboard for her book Reinventing You.

More than just the author, Dorie is a practictioner having developed the methodologies by reinventing herself several times throughout her career.

She started her career with the goal to become a professor, but was turned down for the doctoral program at the schools she applied. 

Undetered, Dorie decided to become a journalist and accepted a position in political journalism.  This turned out to be a good move for Dorie who moved on the become a press secretary on gubernatorial campaign and later a press secretary for a presidential campaign.

Both campaigns resulted in losses. Dorie once again had to adapt,  evolve and reinvent herself.

During her journey, Dorie realized there was no guide or roadmap to teach people how to reinvent themselves. So she leaned on her own experiences and on interviews with dozens of experts she spoke to along the way and eventually Reinventing You was born.

BRENDAN’S STORY

We all have the same 24 hours in a day it’s what we choose to do with our time that matters. If you were to conduct a time audit of how you spend your time, what would you discover?

To his time “in check”, Brendan has a two sticky notes on his computer. One reads,“ No news feed” meaning stay off Facebook. The other is a little more personal and reads, “Wasting time online is wasting time with your son and wife”. This one hits me maybe as hard as it hits Brendan. I’ll just let you marinade on that for a minute.

In the intro I mentioned that Brendan is still a full-time teacher. We discuss the most difficult part of being a teacher. Hint: It’s not what you think.

Having not gone to school to become a business owner, Brendan and I talk about how to gain the skills you need to be successful. We also walk through the 3 stages of blogging and Brendan’s Ah ha moment when he moved from stage 2 to stage 3.
