Tom Pomroy, a 1976 Butte High graduate, is one of the greatest athletes Butte has ever produced.

He earned All-State honors in football, basketball and track as a senior at Butte High School. He earned seven varsity letters and shared the 1976 Harry “Swede” Dahlberg Award for outstanding boy athlete with Dan Bersanti.

Pomroy went on to play football and run track at Montana State University. He was a freshman when coach Sonny Holland’s Bobcats won the NCAA Division II national championship in 1976.

After college, Pomroy got into handball. He is on the short list of the greatest handball players from Butte. He racked up multiple State titles — winning Open and Masters crowns in singles and doubles.

In his mid to late 40s, Pomroy defied his doctor’s orders and returned to the sport despite having two really bad shoulders. He won the State Masters title three out of four years form 2002 through 2005.

He was also a longtime teacher and coach. Listen in to hear his story.

Paul Dennehy was the sophomore quarterback of the 1976 NCAA Division II national champion Montana State football team.

Before he played for Coach Sonny Holland at MSU, the lefty quarterback was a standout for Butte Central. He was a starter at defensive back on the 1973 State championship Maroons team. That was the school's third straight State title and fourth in five years.

The next year, Dennehy took over for fellow lefty Mark Schulte under center. New head coach Bob Beers, at the time, called Dennehy the greatest athlete he ever coached.

When I tried to encourage people to respect the man Ryan Leaf has become instead of judging him for the childish brat that he was, the biggest bust in NFL history blocked me on Twitter.

Larry Hoffman is a lifelong miner. He worked in Butte as well as various locations around North America and South America. The Lewistown native passes on his love for mining to anyone who will listen. That includes his many years leading underground mining tours.

Larry, 79, is also one of the volunteers who climbs to the top of the gallows frames in Butte to install Christmas lights each year. He also makes sure the headframes include the American flag and the Irish flag for the An Ri Ra Irish Festival each August.

Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it was drastically lowering the action level in Butte for lead in residential soils and interior dust. That level is proposed to be dropped from 1,200 parts per million to 175 ppm.

The proposal will also greatly expand the boundary of the cleanup area. If testing in any house or yard inside that expanded zone hits that new level, it will have to be cleaned.

However, the EPA is planning to give those responsible for lowering the high poison levels — British Petroleum and Butte-Silver Bow — 25 years to reach compliance. Depending on how you read the proposal, they might have up to 40 years to clean up the expanded area.

Last Tuesday, players, coaches and fans of the Montana State University-Billings men’s soccer program received some terrible news.

The program is going away.

After a successful run that started in 1996, the school’s administration decided that the NCAA Division II program will play no more games. The school said it will honor the scholarships of the student-athletes on the team. However, it will no longer honor their dreams to compete in soccer for the Yellowjackets.

Coach Paul Cuevas said he received word of the program’s ending about a half hour before his players. He said he had no indication that the program was in trouble. Members of the MSUB administration declined comment. They did send a statement that can be found on ButteCast.com.

Cass Weber is the board president of the Orphan Girl Children’s Theatre in Butte.

On Saturday, the OGT will host a fundraising gala dubbed "The Mad Hatter's ParTea." It will be held in the ball room adjacent to the theatre in the basement of the Mother Lode Theatre.

Tickets are just $35, and that includes dinner from some fine Butte establishments. Metals Sports Bar & Grill will provide a full bar for the event. The cocktail hour and live auction begin at 6 p.m., and Cass says the auction is flooded with great items with ranging price tags.

Go to orphangirl.org to get your tickets today. The price goes up to $40 at the door. Limited childcare is available for the event, which is billed as an 18-plus gala.

Prizes will be awarded for costumes, and each ticket holder who is present will be entered to win a $1,000 shopping spree.
