The Cam & Strick Podcast

On this episode the boys look back on some of the greatest moments from the podcast in 2021, whether its epic stories or hilarious moments, this one has it all. On Episode #165 the boys are joined by possibly the greatest goal scorer in Toronto Maple Leafs history, Rick Vaive. He holds the record for most goals in a season by a Leaf with 54, and also holds the 3rd and 4th spot with 52 and 51 goal seasons. Rick gets into some great stories of his battles with Don Cherry and Mike Keenan, where he goes toe to toe with some hockey giants. He also comments on the Leafs not yet retiring his jersey, and if/when that might happen. We also get into his battle with drinking and depression, and how he fought his way back to a life of sobriety. On Episode #164 the boys are joined by 2-time Olympian and former St. Louis Blues Captain David Backes. His accomplishments are sometimes overlooked, but anyone who watched him play knows he was a damn good player and an even better leader. 900 NHL games, 2 silver medals, and a very unique path to the show, David had stories to tell. He discusses his battle with concussions, crushing guys when the games weren't even televised, and becoming the captain of a rebuilding team in STL. He also talked about leaving the Blues and going to Boston, becoming a regular healthy scratch and eventually landing in sunny California to close out his career. He leaves us with the story of him getting offersheeted by Vancouver early in his career, and signing a one day contract with St. Louis to retire as a Blue.  The boys get into the chaos surrounding the Olympics in China, John Tortorella continuing to give ESPN headline after headline, and the Calgary Flames battle with a COVID outbreak. On Episode #163 the boys are joined by one of the greatest GM's in NHL history, Ken Holland.  He won the Stanley Cup  four times with the Detroit Red Wings, the first in 1997 as assistant general manager and goaltending coach, and three as general manager in 1998, 2002 and 2008. These days, he's the general manager for the Edmonton Oilers. Kenny has had some of the best names in hockey playing on his teams - guys like McDavid, Datsyuk, Draisaitl, Federov, Lidstrom, Zetterberg - even Steve Yzerman - and many other names too. He also discusses how much NHL superstars have changed in his hockey career. He also takes us back to one of the greatest rivalries in history between the 90's Red Wings and Avalanche, the glory days of the Russian 5, and working with Mike Babcock. Before Kenny joins the show the boys go through the league talking about the mess that is the Vancouver Canucks, P.K. On episode #162 the boys are joined by former New York Rangers head coach Davin Quinn. Although known for coaching at Boston University and with the Rangers, Quinn had his own NHL aspirations after being drafted in the 1st round to the Minnesota North Stars but was cut short because of a rare blood condition. He walks us through what that was like and how it shaped him as a coach and person. The boys also had to get the inside scoop on the infamous Tom Wilson/Artemi Panarin situation that led to chaos within the organization, he talks about the Rangers rebuild, lack of toughness, and what he said to his players following the incident. Before we chat with Quinn, the boys go around the NHL in a weird week of biting, glove tossing, and the quick decline of the Montreal front office. On Episode #159 the boys are joined by former NHLer and current spokesperson for violence and abuse prevention, Sheldon Kennedy. This sadly relevant topic isn't a new one and Sheldon knows that all too well as he was sexually abused by his former junior coach Graham Jones when he was just a teenager. This extremely tough but necessary conversation with Sheldon helps shed light on how these horrific acts are as big a problem as ever in hockey and society as a whole.  He gives his take on the Kyle Beach situation as well as what he feels the NHL needs to do moving forward and how parents might approach this topic with their kids. Sheldon continues his advocacy today with Canadian Red Cross by sharing his story and helping those in similar situations, as well as educating coaches and athletes alike on sexual and physical abuse.

Jay McKee was an absolute blast in this interview. From his perspective of the infamous Brett Hull "foot in the crease" cup-winning goal to the never before told Erik Johnson ACL injury story, he shied away from no topic. He was the ultimate 'do whatever it takes' guy that every team wanted and would, self admittedly, overpay for. He gives us maybe the best Keith Tkachuk story ever told as well as the time he almost had to get his leg amputated. The boys also discuss the horrific Kyle Beach situation at length, including coaches, upper management, and locker room involvement. They also touch on Montreal sending down Calder favorite Cole Caufield after a disappointing start for him and the whole team.
