Josh Dawson's father passed away from cancer at the young age of 54, and a genie was born. After some soul searching, he decided to start doing something everyone thought was a little crazy by dressing like a genie and surprising cancer survivors with their dream days. It all goes back to Stupid Cancer, or it least it seems like it does. It was at OMG 2011 in NYC where I met thyroid cancer survivor, Chris Prestano. I knew she was an advocate like me but until this show I had no idea how passionate she is. Not only does she advocate for Stupid Cancer, she also volunteers for ThyCa, a thyroid cancer organization and writes for Everyday Health.

When my friend Eric Galvez and paintballer Andy Wlodyga set out to do a fundraiser for Eric's organization Mass Kickers they immediately thought of paintball. They wanted something that everyone could participate in and forget, even for just a day, about cancer. His name was Tanner Raboin. Tanner was born with a rare disease called chronic granulomatous disease, a disease that suppresses the immune system.

Tanner's dad Steven talks to me about his amazing son, infectious smile, his amazing attitude, and how when the Kings found out about Tanner and how sick he had become, they had a bone marrow drive for him during fan appreciation night with the be the Match organization Sadly Tanner had passed away just 2 days after the registry at the young age of 19.

Steven explains that the importance of Tanner's legacy should not be forgotten, how important it is to be a bone marrow donor, either with a simple cheek swab or via monetary donation, and how the Tannerhead Nation was born. This is the year the Kings finally won the Stanley Cup. I believe Tanner had a small part on their victory.

The Art of War for Cancer by Jeff Carter is an amazing book that takes the work of Sun Tzu's Art of War and gives you a precise straightforward handbook for taking charge of your situation. Jeff Carter wrote the book when his wife had a recurrance with cancer. He wrote it in 90 days so it would be ready for his wife's birthday. I met Lynne Eldridge, MD at the Lungevity Hope Summit last month in DC. She is an amazing woman who quit her practice to focus on lung cancer advocacy. She is an award winning writer, breast cancer survivor and the medical journalist on the New York Times about.com lung cancer site. Lynne talks about her own bout with cancer, how she is helping to inform people and destigmatize lung cancer,her recent book Avoiding Cancer one Day at a Time, and her passion for lung cancer advocacy.
