I met Randall Broad at the 2012 LUNGevity Hope Summit a few weeks ago in Washington DC. He is a Lung Cancer survivor and was one of the keynote speakers at the event. When Brandon Bethea's mom was diagnosed with cancer, she decided to make a bucket list. On her list was to swim with sharks. Sadly, she passed away from cancer before she was able to swim. Brandon kept her dream alive by going to Australia and swim with sharks. Mel talks to Jasper Curry a 19 yr old University of Florida College student who is riding in the 4K for Cancer. A 4,000 mile bike ride from Baltimore to Portland that benefits the Ulman Fund Jasper is riding in honor of his grandmother who passed away from cancer. Mel talks to Josh of LympheDIVAS, a company co-founded by his sister Rachel Troxell. Rachel developed lymphedema, a side effect of breast cancer treatment that can cause permanent swelling in the arms. Her doctors recommended a compression sleeve to help. Not satisfied with the compression sleeves out there, the lack of options, colors, and moisture wicking properties, Rachel went to a fashion designer and LympheDIVAS was born. Sadly, Rachel's cancer came back and she passed away in 2008. Her legacy lives on with every LympheDIVA sleeve and gauntlet. Kareema Batts is a survivor I met at last year's Stupid Cancer summit in NYC. At first I didn't notice she was an amputee. Kareema talks candidly about being an amputee, how she wont define herself as disabled and how getting out of her comfort zone and rock climbing on a First Descents climbing experience changed her life. Mel talks to cancer survivor and former Major League Baseball player Jeff Juden (also a member of the 1999 World Series Champion New York Yankees) Jeff talks about his sister passing of cancer when she was 6, his mother's passing of ovarian cancer as well as his own cancer battle due to his nicotine addiction. Jeff talks candidly about his alcohol addiction, and how he wants to start a neuroblastoma foundation in honor of his sister Kim. Jeff talks about the sunglass line that he helped develop with other professional athletes and he talks about his passion for music and the CD titled "Just Be" he will be releasing shortly with proceeds going to childhood cancer awareness. A Peloton is the ultimate team sport. The most famous peloton is the Tour de France. It is a bike ride or race where you are only as strong as your weakest link. Director Ramsey Tripp and 4 time cancer survivor Laura Davis decided to film a documentary of a 2500 mile 10 day bike ride from Alberta, Canada to Lewiston Maine to finish in The Dempsey Challenge, Yes that Dempsey Challenge! Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey has signed on to Executive produce the film. The film will document the nearly 40 riders, and cancer survivors they are riding for. Nancy Crane, executive director of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation talks to Mel about their amazing foundation that funds research for pediatric cancer trials. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Tampa Bay Lightning among other local celebrities in and around the Tampa area will be shaving their heads to raise money for the foundation.The Pediatric Cancer Foundation is one of the few organizations that focuses on research and finding less toxic therapies for beating kids cancer. March is colon cancer awareness month and Mel sits down with Kristin Lindquist Tabor, founder of the Colon Cancer Coalition: Get Your Rear In Gear. Kristin started the organization in 2002 after she lost her sister to the disease. Kristin's goal is to raise awareness about colon cancer, that anyone can get it, and that you should be proactive about your health. There are events in almost every state for GYRIG.
