Clayton is joined by Michelle Myles, co-owner of Daredevil Tattoo, along with Jack Wesley Friedman. All extremely well versed in New York and Tattoo history, Clayton, Michelle & Jack discuss the origins of tattooing in New York City and America: from Martin Hildebrandt, to Samuel O'reilly, to the Bowery, to the tattoo ban, legalization, to the current state of tattooing.
Myles, originally from St. Louis, came to New York in 1989 to study art at Parsons, before becoming actively involved in the hardcore scene downtown, and eventually the tattoo scene. She began tattooing herself in 1991 at a time when it was still illegal in NYC and much harder to break into. When tattooing was legalized in 1997 Michelle and Brad Fink opened Daredevil Tattoo on Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side, before moving to 141 Division St. in 2013. In addition to tattooing and managing Daredevil, the shop is also host to the Daredevil Tattoo Museum, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing public knowledge and appreciation of the history of tattooing. The Daredevil Tattoo Museum collection comes from co-owner Brad Fink's personal collection of antique tattoo memorabilia that he has amassed over the last 27 years of tattooing. The collection features artifacts from the early roots of modern tattooing with original artwork by Samuel O'Reilly, Bert Grimm, August "Cap" Coleman, George Burchett, Sailor Jerry and many more.
Friedman, who has appeared on the show several times in the past is a documentary filmmaker, a fifth-generation New Yorker, and creator of "The Cobble Stone Wars", a mini-series documentary on NYC's underworld circa 1900. Along with Myles, he brings a vast knowledge of NYC history and tattoo history to the discussion.
