Christopher McDonald (born February 15, 1955) is an American actor renowned for his extensive career in film, television, and theater. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the arrogant golfer Shooter McGavin in the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, a role he reprised in the 2025 sequel Happy Gilmore 2 .
Born in New York City and raised in Romulus, New York, McDonald is one of seven children. He attended Hobart College, initially pursuing a pre-med major before discovering his passion for acting during his senior year. He further honed his craft at esteemed institutions such as the Stella Adler Acting Conservatory in New York, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art .
McDonald’s filmography is diverse, featuring roles in Grease 2 (1982), Thelma & Louise (1991), Quiz Show (1994), Requiem for a Dream (2000), Flubber (1997), and The Iron Giant (1999), where he voiced the character Kent Mansley . On television, he has appeared in series such as Harry’s Law, Boardwalk Empire, and Hacks, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for his role in the latter .
In addition to his screen work, McDonald has an extensive theater background, including performances in Broadway productions like Chicago and Lucky Guy alongside Tom Hanks . He is married to Lupe Gidley, and they have four children. Beyond acting, McDonald is actively involved in charitable endeavors, supporting organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation and cancer research initiatives .
