Today, Al Ramsey joins Nancy to share his personal story of coming out as gay in two separate stories of coming to terms with his identity. On one hand, he was one of the first people to confront the shift in treatment toward the LGBT community in the workforce as he  became an advocate for inclusion at TD bank. Then, with this shift came the need to finally share his full self with his family. Through his courage to come out in both of these situations, Al speaks on how remaining authentic to who he is ultimately allowed him to become a better advocate and make a greater impact in helping other members of the LGBT community.

After having Darla LeDoux as a guest on the podcast, Nancy talks with Kimmi Ward, Darla’s wife, this week! Kimmi gracefully elaborates on the complexities of gender roles that take place in lesbian relationships, especially in regards to the fluidity of partners taking on masculine and feminine energies. She reflects on how these energies were portrayed while growing up, and how they ultimately come to affect her personal relationship to them now. Though being in a same-gender relationship intrinsically demands grappling with these shifting roles, Kimmi shares the importance of continuing to have conscious conversations that make room for all partners to ever evolve.

Doug Schroeder is a spiritual director, contemplative retreat and course facilitator, father, grandfather, and executive director for SoulStream. In this episode, he tells his journey of reconciling his Christian faith with queerness after his daughter came out to him as gay. By simply asking himself, “Who does God love?” and working from there, he shares the experience of watching his faith evolve, as well as some of the more difficult aspects that came with it. Despite losing both his job as a pastor and his spiritual community, Doug offers some of the most meaningful lessons he’s learned from simply having the willingness to have hard conversations.⁠

Nancy has a conversation with her longtime friend, Carla Hartman, about her experience with having her child come out to her as trans. Through his coming out to her, Carla then had to navigate her own coming out to friends and family as having a trans child. Dr. Erin Baker shares about their coming out as Non-binary and recent transition to using They/Them pronouns publicly.  Erin loves living in the And, (The name of her podcast) and how she is now choosing to show up in the world... with using she/her AND they/them pronouns.  It can be an unsteadying roller coaster ride to share more of who you are with the world, especially when you have a lot of eyes watching you as a coach and social psychologist, but Erin has continued to lean into it with authenticity and grace, even when people aren't as accepting as they'd hope.

After recently attending a virtual concert held by Jennifer Knapp, Nancy reflects on Jennifer’s impact on her life, both through her music and her role as a forerunner for those who have come out as queer while still heavily embedded in the Christian world. She recounts one particular instance back in the early 2000s when Nancy first tried coming out to someone in her community. In hindsight, she points out the overlap and small coincidences found in each of their coming out stories and expresses appreciation for the way that Jennifer's own courage helped spark courage in herself to start speaking her truth.
