  • Top 10 Thrillers of the Noughties
    Countdown #373

Wayne has recovered from COVID (three cheers!), so the boys are back together with The Soundboard joining them to countdown the very best thrillers of the Noughties - aka 2000 to 2009.

For this Ep, the guys have decided to celebrate some over-looked or lesser- known thrillers rather than championing the same ten films you'd expect from each of them. Sure, there's still a couple of predictable titles in here, but otherwise, steel yourselves for some foreign language choices (from Paul) and one featuring Halle Berry topless (from Wayne).

That probably sums it up best, as The Countdown continues ...

  • Operation Mincemeat and Firestarter rveiews
When one review a week just isn't enough, the boys at The Countdown lift their game to bring you MORE.

TWO films. TWO reviews. ONE rant.

Which films cops the "treatment"?  Will it be from Wayne as he checks out Operation Mincemeat? Or Paul as he reflects on Firestarter?

One thing is for sure, one of these films will be disappearing from a lot of watchlists ... as The Countdown continues!

  • Top 10 A24 Films
    Countdown #372

The old adage of the show must go on has never been more apt for The Countdown as Wayne pushes through COVID to highlight some of the finer indie films of the last decade or so in this celebration of the very best A24 studio films.

Of course, the guys had to record this week's episode remotely due to Wayne's positive status, and that means the show is minus its third and most valued member, The Soundboard. Wayne, shockingly, thinks this is the highlight of his week, while Paul appropriately commemorates their fallen colleague and wishes it a speedy return.

Beyond that, there's plenty of indie films, some consternation, and a surprising amount of good-natured agreement (Wayne really must be sick!), as The Countdown continues ...

  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness review
For the 28th time, the guys have headed out to the cinema - well, 27th, but no-one saw Thor: The Dark World on the big screen, did they? - to see an MCU film. On this occasion, Doctor Strange is back in a sequel and its directed by horror and superhero film maestro, Sam Raimi. But is it a happy mix?

Can the MCU lean into horror and not lose a solid portion of its audience? Will horror film fans accept this horror-lite entry? Also, does anything of consequence happen here? And is this a vastly inferior film to another one about the multiverse released by A24 only a few short weeks ago?

Learn the answers to all these questions and more as The Countdown continues ...

  • The Marvel Cinematic Universe Ranked!
    Countdown #371

This week in celebration of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wayne and Paul set out to achieve the impossible - at least in THIS universe - by giving their definitive* rankings of the 28 MCU films that have thus far been released.

From the ridges of mediocrity, through the valleys of disappointment, and up into the lofty peaks of amazement, come on a journey with the boys through the last 14 years, celebrating the largest, most inter-connected and ambitious series of films ever made.

Will Wayne ever comes to terms with Marvel Studios' successful application of "youngification" (aka de-aging tech)? Will Paul come round on The Winter Soldier being a top three MCU film? And will the guys see eye to eye on the divisive Iron Man 3?

All this - and more! - as The Countdown continues ...

  • War on Seagal 1: Sniper Special Ops
There is unquestionably too much conflict and violence in this world. And as much as we hate to add to it, we feel we must now take the battle to the podcast’s greatest enemy. No, it is not PG films, or PC Culture, or Forrest Gump, musicals or Blumhouse. It is not even Billy Dunham of We Watched a Thing fame - though after the way he flogged us in the recent vote, he may yet get there!

No, the greatest enemy of The Countdown: Movie and TV Reviews is indisputably Steven Seagal. An awful human being who has allegedly lied his way through a career in Hollywood and allegedly done terrible things to many women along the way. So, here, now, we declare war on Seagal and will fight this war by taking down one terrible film of his at a time.

We're starting with Sniper: Special Ops from 2016 - a supposed war film in which Seagal barely gets off his butt through the entire run time.

Join us as we have too much fun skewering this film and most especially its "star" ... as The Countdown continues.

Highlights of this Ep include Wayne finally revealing the origins of his hatred for Thandiwe Newton, both guys reviewing the Best Picture winner, CODA, and Paul surprising the crap out of Wayne with his Number 1.

  • The Northman review
An epic tale of gory revenge from critical darling director, Robert Eggers? This should be an a lock for Paul, but is too heavy on the indie and not big enough on the gory revenge? Meanwhile, how will Wayne feel about having to sit through something harsher than a buddy cop action extravaganza? And who makes one of the biggest calls in the last two years of the show?

  • Top 10 Touchstone Pictures Films
    Countdown #369

This week the boys tackle the best of Disney Studio's more adult production arm, Touchstone Pictures.

Having been all but shut down in the early 2010s, this is a bit of a trip down Nostalgia Lane for both Paul and Wayne, as they relive the glory days of the action heavy '90s, throw in some solid comedies from a tad earlier, and even get a bit mysterious and spooky in the 2000s.

But wait, there's more! Paul is having to give away all of his DVDs and CDs, while Wayne is aghast at the latest piece of trivia regarding the show's mortal enemy, Steven Seagal.
