The Countdown

How can Nicolas Cage become more Nicolas Cage-like? By playing himself in a meta-buddy-action-comedy, of course!

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent has been getting some really strong early critical reviews, but is this really the beginning of the Cageaissance? Or is it just a solid film which is getting over-hyped because everyone in Hollywood loves a good comeback?

Learn the answers to this key question and more, as The Countdown continues ...

Countdown #368

After 367 countdown, the guys decided it was time for something a little different. So inspired by the idea from this week's guest, the amazing B-Dizzle from the We Watched a Thing Podcast, they decided to not only do the top 10 monologues ever delivered in a film, but to also sell those monologues by performing them.

As you can no doubt imagine, dear listener, what follows are dodgy accents, questionable "acting" and much laughter. But there is also plenty of heart as Paul, Wayne and B-Dizzle reveal what it was about each monologue that touched them.

At least until Wayne once again bends the brief in the manner than only he can ...

Find out whether the guys have an audio-drama podcast in their future, as The Countdown continues!

And please thank Billy for coming on the show by checking out his amazing film review podcast, We Watched a Thing, if you haven't already.

Low angles! Drones! Fast cutting! An over the top (Jake Gyllenhaal) performance! Weird supporting characters with one quirky defining characteristic!

Yes, Michael Bay returns! But this is a slightly more restrained Michael Bay, with almost no icky, lingering shots of his leading actress and some (very basic) LGBTIQA+ representation.

Does it hold together? Will Paul forgive the giant plot holes? And just how many films has Wayne ever recommended?

Countdown #367

344 episodes ago Wayne and Paul attempted to countdown the top 10 remakes ever made.

Unfortunately, they were so utterly and incontrovertibly wrong, they had to return to this topic to make it right.

But to do so, they had to ensure they were on a better track, and so they invited Stew from the Stew World Order podcast to help them out with the topic.

Except, things then went crazy. How crazy you might ask? Well, Wayne in hindsight opted to censor himself resulting in one of the first "Editor's Notes" ever included in the show, Stew decided to include a certain sequel in his list, labelling it a remake, and Paul let Wayne claim the 1990 film Flatliners was a remake without freaking out.

You see? Crazy.

So get on board the crazy train ... As The Countdown continues.

Please thank Stew for coming on the show by checking out his show and website ASAP!

So Sony dip their toes back into the Spider-Verse with another bad guy/anti-hero film, hoping to emulate the success of Tom Hardy's Venom. But Jared Leto is no Tom Hardy (except, possibly, to Charlize Theron), so the question becomes how does this one stack up?

And, well, the answer is "not well".

Countdown #366

In celebration of how much Morbius sucks, the boys this week decided to countdown the top 10 vampire movies. The first big hurdle therefore being: Are there actually ten good ones.

Turns out there is, so join Wayne and Paul as they side-eye the throbbing carotid artery in your neck, freak out at how much garlic is sprinkled on their pasta, and cleverly avoid ever letting you see them in a mirror.

Oh and stay tuned for the hilarious results of the Oscar predictions, as you will once again wonder how you ever got by in life without this show to guide you :P

Time for something almost indescribably completely different. A film by (The) Daniels (dual director names which Wayne loves), Everything Everywhere All at Once is a sci-fi comedy fantasy drama which you should probably just go and see. But if you need to be convinced, have a listen until the Spoilers tag to learn just how out there this film is and whether the guys can like a film bordering on 140 minutes long ... as The Countdown continues.

Countdown #365

Villains and their victories is the subject of this week's Ep, as the guys countdown the Top 10 Films in Which the Villains Win.

Is it a serial killer, hitman, crime lord, femme fatale or comic book super villain who will take out the ultimate honour? Will Paul have the obvious choice as his number one? And can Wayne remember that a film is not a show?

All the hard-hitting questions get answered this week, as The Countdown continues ...

Paul and Wayne check out the full eight episodes of the first season of this new show from Apple TV+. Given it's created by Christoper Miller (with some help from Phil Lord), you know it's in their wheel house, but can Wayne get past his love of Ike Barinholtz to be objective? Will Paul give it time of day after he sees the musical episode? And has Wayne infected Paul with his penchant for calling shows films and vice versa?

Countdown #364

This year's Oscars-themed show bravely treads where few podcasts have gone before by offering predictions in the major categories and then denouncing half of them in a countdown of the WORST 10 films ever nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award.

As if that's not controversial enough, both of the guys name several past Best Picture winners on their lists, while Wayne takes severe umbrage at some of the listener feedback on this topic.

In other words, it's quite the spicy episode layered with one hot take after another.

So join Paul and Wayne to find out just how spicy, as The Countdown continues ...
