The Cowboy Palace From Chris Johnson Breaking Down Better Days Ahead

Listen Later

Sometimes dreams only come true when you build them yourself. For Chris Johnson, that philosophy has defined a remarkable career spanning decades in the music industry. Now, after years spent creating opportunities for other artists while quietly honing his own craft, Johnson is stepping back into the spotlight with his powerful new single, "Better Days Ahead," out June 26 2026, and  the first release from his forthcoming album, Tales From The Cowboy Palace.Born and raised in the rural community of Lakeside in San Diego County, California, Johnson grew up balancing life between Future Farmers of America, horseback riding, surfing and skateboarding. Raised among cattle, rodeos, and wide-open spaces, he proudly identifies as an "urban cowboy"—someone who may live in the suburbs but carries a rural spirit at heart.Chris Johnson is a California-born singer-songwriter, musician, entrepreneur, and self-described urban cowboy whose career spans performance, production, sound engineering, venue ownership, and artist development. Raised in Lakeside, California, Johnson has spent decades immersed in the music industry while continuing to write songs rooted in real-life experiences. His upcoming album, Tales From The Cowboy Palace, showcases his distinctive blend of traditional Country storytelling and hard-earned authenticity.Music was woven into Johnson's life from the very beginning. With a mother, aunts, and grandfathers who were all musicians, his passion for songwriting and performance came naturally. By the age of twelve, he was already playing guitar and singing alongside his mother at schools, county fairs, senior centers, and community events. Influenced by legends such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Huggard, George Jones, John Denver, and Pete Seeger, Johnson developed a deep appreciation for storytelling through song.As a teenager, he played in school bands before forming his own country rock group. During college, he fronted a local band called Border Tones before pursuing solo performances throughout Southern California. His journey eventually led him to Los Angeles, where he attended Musicians Institute and joined a booking agency that sent him across the country performing corporate events and hotel engagements. While the experience sharpened his skills as a performer, Johnson ultimately felt pulled toward creating music of his own."I really wanted to get back to doing my own music," Johnson recalls. "I didn't even have a house—we were just in band houses and hotel rooms all the time."Back in Los Angeles, Johnson built an impressive behind-the-scenes career, running sound for legendary venues including the Whisky A Go Go and the Roxy, managing backline operations for FM Station. Also, touring as guitar tech for John Fogerty, Styx, Government Mule, Lisa Marie Presley, Chaka Khan and System of A Down. While also performing demo vocals, composing commercial jingles, and providing voiceover work. He also launched his own equipment company, Hollywood Studio Rentals, Valley Production Storage and Drum Paradise LA before eventually purchasing the very Country music venue where he frequently performed—the famed Cowboy Palace.Through every chapter of his career, songwriting remained a constant. Now, Tales From The Cowboy Palace serves as the culmination of a lifetime of experiences, offering listeners an authentic collection of songs centered around perseverance, freedom, fatherhood, motorcycles, hard work, and redemption. Backed by his band, The Hollywood Hillbillies, Johnson delivers a modern Country project enriched by decades of musical influences and real-world experiences.Lead single "Better Days Ahead" stands as a heartfelt anthem for dreamers, workers, and anyone pushing forward through adversity."It's about working my ass off when I had nothing," Johnson says. "Dreaming of giving a better life to my wife and kids."
