The Context of White Supremacy (C.O.W.S.) welcomes Professor Philip Dray. A faculty member of The New School In New York, Dray is an award-winning author and a Fellow of the New York Institute for the Humanities at NYU. The January 6th White Treasonous assault on the Capitol building immediately reminded Gus T. Renegade of Dray's 2003 book, At The Hands of Persons Unknown: The Lynching of Black America. A Pulitzer Prize finalist, the well-documented book tracks the history of White Supremacist violence against black people. Dray cites many topics and people C.O.W.S. listeners should be familiar with: former South Carolina governor "Pitchfork" Ben Tillman, the film Birth of a Nation, esteemed journalist Ida B. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 9th study session on Jeffrey Toobin's The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson. This 1996 New York Times bestseller enjoyed two different waves of success. It was critically acclaimed during the initial mid-90's publication and was resurrected during the much celebrated 2016 FX miniseries - which is based on Toobin's work. Toobin compiled three glorious decades of journalism, spawned from his coverage of the Simpson trial. He wrote beloved books on the Supreme Court and authored a scathing indictment of President Donald J. Trump. Things were jubilant until the year of the rona. While participating in a live Zoom conference with prominent White journalists, Toobin brandished his penis and began masturbating. He was initially suspended by the New Yorker. After an investigation, Toobin was terminated. We'll keep this in mind while reading his account of the most well documented, most watched court trial of all time. Last week's session introduced Christopher Darden to the narrative. Toobin, and pretty much everyone else (except Darden) concluded the White prosecutors "needed" a black person on their team. Darden details being branded a "sellout" and "Uncle Tom" for taking the case and admits that his relationship with Johnnie Cochran was damaged as a result of the trial. Darden and the prosecution emphasize domestic violence in their opening arguments, insisting that Simpson battered and humiliated Nicole for years. Toobin correctly points out there is evidence of exactly one incident of Simpon's violence. Much of the prosecution's evidence depends on testimony like that of Ron Shipp. Described by Toobin as a Simpson "toady," Shipp testified that OJ beat Nicole and even confessed to having had dreams of killing his ex-wife. A silver medal-winner from the 2012 Olympics in London, Bausch was a part of the inaugural team pursuit competition and became the oldest athlete in history in her cycling division. After retiring from a championship athletic career, Bausch became a dedicated advocate for plant-based eating. Her life and times are documented in the Netflix documentary "Personal Gold." Bausch is also in the popular flick Game Changers, where a number of professional athletes demonstrate how a plant based diet boosted their physical abilities. Bausch shares candidly about her previous troubles with eating disorders and substance abuse and how correct eating helped her become a better athlete and resist unhealthy addictions. We'll discuss the importance of plant-based eating in the context of the covid-19 pandemic. For nearly a full calendar year, medical professionals around the world have emphasized the added risk of being overweight. Jury consultants informed the defense and prosecution that black females were Simpson's most supportive group and that they did not empathize with Nicole Brown Simpson #GoldDigger Toobin emphasizes the alleged lowbrow nature of the predominantly black female group - highlighting their lack of education and income, minuscule reading tendencies, and overwhelmingly Democratic political views. Toobin also described Faye Resnick as another White heroine who could have helped secure a guilty verdict had she testified. Resnick wrote a bestselling book that was published during jury selection for the trial.
