Brazilian football (soccer) legend Pelé died the final week of 2022 at the age of 82. The only player to win 3 World Cup Championships and the "Athlete of the 20th Century" according to many White journalists and historians, Pelé is classified as black and was born in 1940, a measly 52 years after Brazil abolished formal enslavement of black people in 1888. Racists didn't even allow black people to play football/soccer in Brazil for many decades. We'll learn about the System of White Supremacy in South America and one of the greatest athletes of any sport. Listeners should be mindful that Brazil just endured riots and violent protests after a contentious presidential election. The scene was eerily similar to the 2021 mayhem on January 6th in Washington, D.C. Last week's installment provided a wealth of author notes, where the Mr. Filho as well as the translator, Mr. Draper, detailed their objectives for the project. Importantly, White enslavement of black people is the foundation of Brazilian culture and this book. Before getting to Pelé, Filho details the origins of soccer in Brazil - which is detailed as a White Man's game. The few non-white players who were allowed to play, like Francisco Carregal, are described as being immaculate with their attire. White White ball players are free to be slobs cause they're White. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Paul S. Chan and Dr. Anezi I. Uzendu. In October of 2022, The New England Journal of Medicine released a report showing that black and "hispanic" people are less likely to receive CPR from bystanders in any environment. This was reported prior to Damar Hamlin, 24-year-old black male who nearly died on the tackle football field before being resuscitated by highly decorated medical staff. The night of the tragic injury, Gus tweeted that if Hamlin experienced cardiac arrest away from the stadium, he would be substantially less likely to get help. Dr. Chan co-authored the report that confirms Gus's social media outburst. We'll discuss potential strategies to combat this problem - including: teaching non-white children CPR in school or even during the upcoming Super Bowl with Hamlin leading the instructions. Dr. Uzendu makes this information painfully relevant by relating his own near-death experience when he suffered cardiac arrest during a basketball contest at the age of 25-years-old. In South America, supporters of Jair Bolsonaro rioted and terrorized government buildings to demonstrate their rejection of the electoral process. Journalists around the globe compared the fracas to the January 6th carnage in Washington, D.C. from 2021. Gus didn't see too many dark people running wild in the streets of Brazil. We'll also review the stabbing death of 29-year-old Devonna Walker. She had a verbal altercation with her White neighbors, but things escalated. Walker was cursed and called racial epithets before she got angry and physically charged the White Woman. A White Man steps out of his residence and apparently stabs Walker to death. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Julie M. Stamm. With a doctorate in anatomy and neurobiology from the Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Stamm conducted research at the Boston University Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center and the Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She's also a White Woman who was raised in rural Wisconsin in an area that may be a Racially Restricted Region (Sundown Town). She confessed to hearing Racist Jokes - even from her White family members - and sometimes chuckling. Much of the US kicked off the so-called new year with Monday Night Football's gridiron clash between the hosting Cincinnati Bengals and the visiting Buffalo Bills. 24-year-old Damar Hamlin was nearly killed on the field after a collision with the Bengals's Tee Higgins. Millions watched Hamlin receive nearly 10 minutes of CPR to get him "restarted." We'll use this tragedy to investigate the dangers of tackle football, especially for young children, in Dr. Stamm's 2021 publication, The Brain on Youth Sports: The Science, the Myths, and the Future. The text is intended for parents and youth coaches to better understand the risks of collision sports to the still-developing child brain. Dr. Stamm shared that there are reports that suggest black players are less informed about concussions/Brain Damage than their White counter-parts. We also discuss how the culture of tackle football (White culture?) contributes to obesity even while claiming to encourage exercise. During the weekly installment of NFL brain damage, a 24-year-old black male, Daran Hamlin, nearly died on the field after suffering a viscous collision with a black male player on the opposing team. Hamlin needed approximately 10 minutes of CPR and was resuscitated twice before being transported to a local trauma unit. He's now breathing on his own and expected recover. A listener wrote Gus ans asked about the use of the terms "equality" and "equity" while at work. Gus always think it's best to ask the White people in charge to explain what they mean when they use these terms. One can check the employee handbook for definitions as well. With these words - as well as the term "diversity" - non-white people can equate these terms with JUSTICE - meaning no one is mistreated. If challenged, one can retort: Does "equality" "equity" mean injustice? We'll also hear about the workplace experience of Wes Hall. He migrated to Canada as a teen, and talks about the numerous ways White Supremacy/Racism obstructed his career. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th and final study session on Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's In The Blink of an Eye. Abdul-Rauf, formerly known as Chris Jackson, is a retired NBA player who became infamous for not participating in the national anthem during the 1996 season. Abdul-Rauf was quickly ejected from the league and all but forgotten. In fact, White journalists found as many of Abdul-Rauf's black co-workers as possible to have them criticize how he responded to White Supremacy/Racism. Gus hopes that by studying Abdul-Rauf's tribulations, non-white people will better understand the importance of resisting the urge to criticize other Victims of Racism. Last week, Abdul-Rauf described his deepening Muslim faith which included making the pilgrimage to Mecca. Moving away from the niggerization process, Abdul-Rauf read as much as he could. Unfortunately, he tried to share books and constructive information with his Denver Nuggets teammates. This and his pre-game prayers riled up White management even before the anthem controversy. His name change wasn't popular either. We concluded with Abdul-Rauf constructing his dream house for he and his wife in Kiln, Mississippi. This is NFL legend Brett Favre's hometown. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Marques Travae. Although born in the US, Travae moved to Brazil and lived there for years. He's been back in the states for a little over a year. We've spoke with him about White Supremacy/Racism in South America a number of times over the years. Gus checked on his work following the death of beloved footballer Pelé. The 82-year-old soccer legend was honored all over the world - even while Whites acknowledged the Racism Pelé endured for the duration of his life.
