We move from the Salem witch trials, Gnostic Christianity, Tantra and the Aghori to Lilith, Lucifer, Prometheus, Baphomet, Aleister Crowley, Babalon, Austin Osman Spare, chaos magick, Genesis P-Orridge, and modern Satanism.

At the center is a simple argument: transgression only has transformative power when the boundary being crossed is actually real for the person crossing it. Once rebellion becomes an identity, an aesthetic, or something the marketplace can sell back to us, it begins to lose its charge.

So what is genuinely forbidden now?

Perhaps the most transgressive acts left to us are not greater acts of rebellion, but sincerity, devotion, sustained attention, commitment, belief, and even the willingness to bow.

In this live talk at The Fool in Berlin, I shared my transformational journey from being a depressed, suicidal teenager to discovering the life-changing power of ritual magic through Aleister Crowley's work. I weave my own experience of devastating loss with the stories of Orpheus, Chiron, Rumi, Tristan and Isolde, and others who were shaped by wounds they never fully healed from. Rather than trying to “get over” the pain, I chose to sanctify it—to treat it as a passage into deeper love, art, and soul. This essay is both a mourning song and a love letter to those who carry their own sacred wounds, and an offering of hope that our suffering, if honored, can become the very source of our genius.
