  • Episode 50: Coaching the Columbia Men's Basketball Team
    Welcome to the CUSP Show, Basketball Edition. For the next couple of weeks, we will have an additional podcast where we dive into the stories of the people that make Columbia Men’s and Women’s Basketball so great.

    For our seventh episode, we have Jim Engles, the coach of the Columbia University’s Men’s Basketball team, joining us this week for a conversation the challenges and stories behind the team. Named the 2015 Metropolitan and Mid-Major Coach of the Year, Engles returns to Columbia after spending the past eight years as head coach for the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Over the past six seasons at NJIT, Engles compiled a 100-88 record, including back-to-back 20-win seasons the past two years. Prior to leading the Highlanders, Engles served as an assistant coach at Columbia under former head coach Joe Jones from 2003 to 2008.

    In this episode, Coach Engles talks to Joe and Tom about the current state of the Columbia Lions Men’s Basketball team. he also talks about some of the technologies that they are using and he shares some stories about the team.   • Episode 49: Searching for the Best Talent in Sports
    Scott Carmichael joins Joe and Tom this week for a conversation on Sport’s recruiting. Scott Carmichael, An industry veteran with nearly 40 years experience in the sports business, founded Prodigy Sports in 2007.  Now entering his 10th year leading the agency, Carmichael has established Prodigy Sports into one of the nation’s premier boutique executive search firms, working with a roster of clients that reads like a Who’s Who in the sports world, including five of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.

    Scott talks about his life prior to Prodigy sports, from being a ballboy when he was a teenager all the way to his work with the NHL.  Scott also talks about the talent recruiting business, more specifically his work with his company Prodigy Sports. Scott ends the conversation with some tips for people looking to build their recruiting profile.

  • Episode 48: The Return of Coach Griffith
    Welcome to the CUSP Show, Basketball Edition. For the next couple of weeks, we will have an additional podcast where we dive into the stories of the people that make Columbia Men’s and Women’s Basketball so great.

    For our sixth episode, we Megan Griffith, the coach of the Women’s Basketball team, joining us this week for a conversation on the intricacies behind coaching an Ivy League team. Coach Griffith spent six seasons on the women’s basketball coaching staff at Princeton University, including the last four as an assistant coach and the team’s recruiting coordinator. The last two years, Griffith helped Princeton make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament. During that span, the Tigers posted a 54-7 overall record, including an undefeated 30-0 regular season in 2014-15.This year marks her first as the coach of the Columbia Lions.

    In this episode, Coach Griffith talks to Joe and Tom about the current state of the Columbia Lions Women’s Basketball team. She also talks about her life before she became a coach and she mentions her inspirations.   • eSports: Community and Business
    Maurice Eisenmann joins Joe this year’s last episode of the CUSP show for an in-depth conversation on eSports.

    Maurice Eisenmann, who was born and raised in Amsterdam, is currently the producer of The CUSP Show and is also a student at the Columbia University Sports Management program. He is an avid video gamer and eSports expert who has done academic research on the booming industry. He also is a writer on the business side of sports business with a focus on digital media and eSports. Before Maurice started at Columbia, he founded a successful music production company.

    Maurice talks about his story, from growing up in Amsterdam all the way to studying at Columbia University. He and Joe have a discussion on the business side of esports. Specifically, about the eSports community and why traditional sports owners are investing in eSports.

    Welcome to the CUSP Show, Basketball Edition. For the next couple of weeks, we will have an additional podcast where we dive into the stories of the people that make Columbia Men’s and Women’s Basketball so great.

     

    For our sixth episode, we have Jerry Sherwin joining us. If you have ever been to a Columbia Basketball event, you have seen Jerry. Jerry has been involved with the Columbia Basketball for over sixty years, he has become a cornerstone of the program and he can be called the historian on anything Columbia Basketball.

    In this episode, jerry talks to Joe and Tom about the history of the Columbia Basketball team, from the golden ages in the fifties and sixties all the way to the current team.   • Episode 45: PR at the NBA
    Brian McIntyre and Terry Lyons join Joe this week for a conversation on public relations at the NBA. Brian oversaw public relations activities for every major NBA event from 1982 through 2010, including The Playoffs, The Finals, NBA All-Star, the NBA Draft, the NBA Draft Lottery, the McDonald’s Championship and other events. He was heavily involved in the launch of both the WNBA and the NBA Development League. He developed and implemented many of the communications policies and procedures currently in place for all three leagues and oversaw day-to-day responsibilities, strategies and problem solving. Lyons was responsible for all NBA communications, public relations and media activities outside the USA. He supervised and helped train 15 regional communications staff stationed in the NBA’s Asia-Pacific and European offices and coordinated for all international public relations activities generated in the NBA’s headquarters in New York and New Jersey.

    Brian and Terry talk about their time at the NBA, from being one of the first hires by David Stern when the NBA only had 30 employees to growing the league into a multi-billion-dollar company. They share stories of working under David Stern and growing the NBA internationally. They also tell us how it is to work with some of the all-time greats like Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. If you are interested in the inner-workings of the NBA or sportsbiz in general this is a must listen!

    Ross Greenburg joins Joe and Tom this week for a conversation on sports television. Ross is the Emmy award winning filmmaker behind Ross Greenburg Productions. He served as Vice President and Executive Producer of HBO Sports from 1985-1990, Senior Vice President and Executive Producer from 1990-2000, and then President of HBO Sports from 2000-2011. Ross is recognized as one of the most innovative Producers and best storytellers in television history. He now brings his creativity and vision to a larger audience, and a wider variety of programming opportunities.

    Ross talks about creating some of the most historical sports television in history. He shares his views on the current state of the television industry and the future of the sports television industry.
