Today's guest is Mike Ashby, Program Coordinator at Fanshawe College in Ontario. Mike is a Tool and Die Maker by trade and when the manufacturing industry took a hit, he took a chance on teaching Technology Studies at the Secondary school level. Although he wasn't sure if he was cut out to be a teacher, he quickly felt how rewarding it was to help support the next generation.

The CWB Association has had the honor of working with Skills/Compétences Canada on a special Podcast Series interviewing members of the National Alumni Committee (NAC) from each province and territory to share their Skills journey. Every year, hundreds of Canadian youth participate in the Skills Canada National Competition and become alumni of their programs. The NAC was formed to create, support, and provide guidance to the Skills Canada provincial and territorial Alumni Associations across the country.

Today’s guest is Marisa Sosa, Director of Programs and Diversity & Inclusion at Skills/Compétences Canada. Growing up Marisa wanted to be a doctor but after high school she studied Linguistics. Marisa realized she wanted to make a difference and found meaningful work with a not-for-profit organization which later led to her position today with Skills Canada.

Today’s guest is Amiel Hernandez, a Public Health Nurse in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Amiel was first introduced to Skills Canada while attending high school in 2013. Her homeroom teacher at the time ran their school’s skills club for hairstyling and baking. She decided to join the baking club because as a young child, Amiel was always amazed with how pastry chefs created desserts that were aesthetically pleasing and delicious. Recently, she has reconnected with Skills Nunavut to help support young Nunavummiut in discovering, and developing their interest for the trades.

Today’s guest is Sam Turgeon-Brabazon, a young innovator passionate about having a positive impact on his community. Since he first became involved with Skills Compétences Canada in 2015, he has gained extensive experience in public policy analysis, business development, government relations, and interdisciplinary project management while working at the House of Commons and after at startups in regulated industries. Currently, Sam is enrolled in the M. Management Innovation and Entrepreneurship program at the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University. As President of the Skills Ontario Alumni Association, Sam is passionate about fostering mutually beneficial collaborations with industry stakeholders and governments, alike, to bolster the pipeline of up-and-coming talent in Ontario and across Canada.

Today’s guest is Emma Lewis, working towards  degree in Jazz Performance at the University of Manitoba. When Emma was in Grade 3 she participated in a public speaking competition and realized she was good at it and every year incorporated it in her activities. Emma first became involved with Skills Canada through her high school and competed in Public Speaking from 2017 to 2019. She remains an active member and currently serves as the Media Chair of the Alumni Committee. Emma credits Skills Canada for playing a crucial role in her growth as a musician and performer.

Today’s guest is Jacob Waldbillig, an Architectural Technologist from Edmonton, Alberta. Jacob started learning about Architecture in high school and knew his passion could turn into a career after attending an open house at NAIT for their Architecture Program.

The CWB Welding Foundation is a national not-for-profit registered charity, founded by the CWB Group in 2013, celebrating their 10 year anniversary this year. Today’s guest is Allison Wragg, a business student and photographer, working towards her bachelor of commerce degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Allison's passion for photography began when she participated in Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador's (SCNL) photography competition in 2015 during her 8th-grade year.  She now serves as the Alumni President, a role she has held since September 2022.
