Earlier this week, the House of Representatives easily passed legislation that would essentially ban TikTok from the country unless its parent company sold its American user base. And while the bill faces a rockier path through the Senate, President Biden has already said he would sign it if it gets to his desk. But what’s actually in the bill and why are some wary that it won’t stop with TikTok?

US intelligence agencies issued their 2024 Annual Threat Assessment this week, warning that our country faces an “increasingly fragile world order.” In the book of Job, we learn that God uses our challenges to rescue us from challenges and our suffering to save us from suffering. Today, we focus on how to take our anticipatory stress about tomorrow and transform it to inner strength found through the cross.

NASA is preparing its Europa Clipper spaceship for an October launch to orbit Jupiter’s moon. The craft will include a poem that states we are “creatures of constant awe.” In our transactional culture, it is tempting to treat everything and everyone as a means to a personal end. Do you go to the Lord as a means to an end, or to be in awe of him as a transformed person?

Kate Middleton has been in the center of a media firestorm since abdominal surgery on January 16 removed her from the public eye. You likely follow news about the Princess of Wales and her family with some degree of interest. But knowing about the royal family and knowing them personally are two very different things. Do you know Jesus personally, or do you only know about him?

Oppenheimer won seven Academy Awards at the Oscars last night. The movie has been described as a “feel-bad hit for our feel-bad age.” In a culture of relative morality and pessimistic worldviews, we can rely on God’s principles found in the gospel to uniquely respond with the hope we long to embrace today.

President Biden’s State of the Union address last night left many surprised, both by what he said and even more so by the way in which he said it. Yet, of all the policies and promises with which he filled more than an hour of airtime, how many does he actually have the power to accomplish? Moreover, should we see those roadblocks as a feature or a bug of our political system? The answers matter to more than just this November’s election.

President Biden will likely begin tonight’s address with the declaration, “The State of the Union is strong,” an assertion made by nearly every president in this setting since Ronald Reagan began the practice in 1983. In tonight’s case, some commentators will agree with the president’s claim, while others will disagree. Each will try to convince us that their version of reality is our reality. This is because our “post-truth” culture believes that truth is perception. If we believe something to be true, it is therefore true for us, or so we think. This viewpoint is becoming more dangerous now than at any time in human history.

Nikki Haley plans to suspend her Republican campaign for president after having won only Vermont and the District of Columbia. Donald Trump has won every other primary so far. And President Joe Biden has won every Democratic delegate awarded thus far. As the 2024 election looms, we must be wary of the internal threat of our politics becoming our religion and the external threat of AI altering our humanity.

The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that states lack the power to reject presidential candidates on the grounds that they engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the US. This decision restores former President Donald Trump’s name to the Colorado ballot and ends similar challenges to his candidacy elsewhere. In a democratic republic in particular, and in life in general, autonomous authority can be dangerous. Nowhere is this more true today than with the growing threat represented by artificial intelligence, our focus for this week.

Unless the global community takes action, AI-enabled lethal autonomous weapons could soon fight our wars and choose their own targets. In fact, Ukrainian drone company Saker claims it’s already fielded a fully autonomous weapon using AI. Such technology could also be incorporated into nuclear weapons. How can we continue to live with faith in such a fearful world?
