  • 5-year-old raises over $17,000 with “Lemonade for Lahaina”

Five-year-old Edison Juel of Seattle raised $17,000 for Lahaina relief through his lemonade stand. His heart for generosity and helping others is a life principle worth considering, especially as our culture becomes increasingly anti-religion. When we can help others by sharing our faith, how can we as Christians defend our faith without becoming defensive or taking up arms in the culture wars?

  • Harvard’s Arthur C. Brooks on the secret to happiness

Harvard professor Arthur C. Brooks, who specializes in happiness studies, explained in a recent Harvard Business Review interview that our collective happiness “took a real big dip when social media came along” and was further exacerbated by the coronavirus. So how do we fix that? For Christians, the answer lies in knowing the difference between means as ends and means to an eternal end.

  • Why you can’t wear white after Labor Day: Reflections on America’s post-Christian future

How did the tradition that you can’t wear white after Labor Day begin? And what does it say about our culture that the tradition no longer holds as much sway? In other news, China has fallen on significant economic hard times in recent years. If that can happen to such a world superpower, should America still feel confident about its present and future? And what role should we play as Christians in our secularized, post-Christian nation?

  • Jimmy Buffett’s cause of death revealed: A Labor Day reflection on mortality and transcendent joy

Singer-songwriter and entrepreneur Jimmy Buffett died Friday at 76 from Merkel cell skin cancer. And Sarah Young, author of the popular “Jesus Calling” devotional, died last Thursday after suffering from various illnesses for years. When famous people die, we can’t help but consider our own mortality and the legacy we’ll leave when we pass. How should your belief in God and heaven empower your work on earth today?

  • Why a good God must allow suffering—even innocent suffering—to exist

Across much of this week, the focus has been on how natural disasters like Hurricane Idalia can lead us to question God's goodness and force us to wrestle with the existence of suffering in this world. Today, let’s continue that discussion by taking it a step further to discuss why such suffering is not only redeemable but necessary in light of God's goodness.

  • Florida residents riding out Hurricane Idalia had to “swim out of their windows”: Personal reflections on innocent suffering

Hurricane Idalia slammed into Florida’s Big Bend area yesterday morning. Some residents who chose to ride out the storm at home had to “swim out of their windows” to escape waves of water crashing through their front doors. In other news, a fire ripped through a rundown five-story building in Johannesburg, South Africa, killing at least seventy-three people as of this morning. And today is the anniversary of Princess Diana’s death in 1997 at the age of thirty-six.

The day’s news so often asks us to consider the incongruity of innocent suffering with who we know God to be: all-loving and all-powerful. To that end, I offer some very personal reflections on suffering and look to David’s honesty with God in Psalm 3.

  • “No one has seen this”: Hurricane Idalia could be an “unprecedented event”

Hurricane Idalia strengthened into a powerful Category 4 storm early this morning and is expected to make landfall soon on the Big Bend region of Florida’s Gulf Coast. The National Weather Service predicts the storm will “likely be an unprecedented event” for the area, noting that no major hurricanes have struck this region in recorded history and adding, “When you try to compare this storm to others, DON’T. No one has seen this.”

In the face of disaster, it is human nature to turn instinctively to God. Here’s the larger question: In the face of suffering, why pray to God at all?

  • Idalia set to strike Florida tomorrow as Category 3 hurricane

Idalia has strengthened to hurricane force and is expected to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast tomorrow as a powerful Category 3 hurricane. On this day in 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, resulting in 1,800 lives lost. Natural catastrophes like hurricanes starkly remind us of our mortality, and Christians and non-Christians often minimize the fact of death. So how can we best maximize our time on earth to God’s glory?

  • Dr. King’s “Dream” speech commemorated in Washington as “racially motivated” shooter kills three in Florida

Sixty years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famed “I Have A Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as part of the March on Washington. Last Saturday, thousands of Americans gathered in our nation’s capital to commemorate the event.

The same day, a white gunman killed three Black people in a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, before shooting himself. The Jacksonville sheriff told a press conference, “This shooting was racially motivated, and he hated Black people.”

In the context of Dr. King’s speech, prejudice—an innate sense of superiority over another person or race—is an endemic result of the Fall and our “will to power” (Genesis 3:5).

We can and should legislate against it. We can and should take every practical means to minimize its existence and horrific effects. But we cannot eradicate it without the help of the God who made us. As a result, we need the Holy Spirit to do three things we cannot do for ourselves.

  • MLB’s Faith and Family events can expand our view of evangelism

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently held their first Christian Faith and Family Day since 2019, featuring the likes of actor Chris Pratt, pitcher Clayton Kershaw, manager Dave Roberts, and singer Jeremy Camp. Eighteen Major League teams host similar Faith and Family nights. While the details can vary from place to place, they continue a decades-long tradition, one that still has a lot to teach us today.
