Health experts and harm reduction advocates are appealing to government to review the newly tabled tobacco bill (The Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill). One of their key concerns is that the bill violates human rights as the tightened restrictions around one of the most effective tools in reducing harm and achieving smoking cessation will fall away.

Employees who report for duty under the influence of alcohol or drugs present a real problem in the workplace. The use of alcohol or drugs affects an employee’s sight, speech, coordination and reaction speed. In addition, employees working with machinery or driving a vehicle whilst under the influence pose a high risk to the employer, themselves and their colleagues.

 It is the employer’s responsibility to create a safe working environment for all employees and must always act in accordance with the applicable disciplinary code. Are zero tolerance policies effective when it comes to addressing the social impact substance abuse has on the workplace? Are they adequate support groups for employees who are seeking help? Are these interventions against only skewed to intoxication and consumption without looking at the implications of possession? Today (26 of June), marks 68 years since the adoption of the Freedom Charter in 1955. From the 25th till the 26th of June, over 3 000 representatives from the different resistance movements made-up of different race groups made their way through police cordons to gather on a dusty square in Kliptown where they were in one accord giving their own inputs to the South Africa they would like to live in. One of the major adaptations they agreed on was that South Africa belongs to all who live in it. From this, they adopted the Freedom Charter a full document that stipulated the roadmap for the future of the country which included, economic inclusion, equality to justice and human rights to name a few. But today as we head towards 30 years of our democracy, South Africans feel disgruntled. On Friday, Tabea Kabinde, who is the Chairperson of the Commission for Employment Equity briefed the media around on the status of the country’s employment equity. Her report indicates that the pace of transformation is still very slow. It goes on to say that top management positions are still largely occupied by whites at 62%, followed by Africans at 16%, despite the fact that Africans have the highest number in professional qualification at 48% compared to whites at 30%. Eskom yesterday (Wednesday) announced that they are withdrawing their services as they fear for the safety of their technicians. Some of the reports talk about the lack of water, residents sharing communal taps, roads not serviced. Crime adds to their problems. Let’s use this opportunity now to speak to the different stakeholders to get an understanding of finding a solution for that community as their issues are not new
