South Africa's economy has plummeted by 51-percent in the second quarter of 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown. According to Statistics South Africa the contraction is the fourth consecutive decline in quarterly GDP since the second quarter of 2019. Contributions to the contraction came from a decrease in manufacturing and mining production output as well as a decrease in the catering and accommodation industries during lockdown level-five and level-four. What does this mean for all of us especially the poor? Is this an indication that we in for a terrible time and worse can it get?

The Deputy Minister of Finance David Masondo says the main contributing factor to distressed municipalities is unfunded budgets. He says it’s about time that the leadership at municipal level is held accountable for poor financial management. Masondo was briefing the NCOP on government's interventions to change the current state of local government. Last week cchairperson of South Africa's Commission on State Capture expressed his dismay and shock at the level of corruption around Personal Protective Equipment, while the country is still investigating allegation into state capture. He was speaking during the testimony of former ANC MP Vincent Smith whom the commission heard that he got money from BOSASA for his daughter's university fees disguised as a settlement for a car accident last week. Many of the witnesses were not forthcoming with information saying they have forgotten….

The Democratic Alliance Federal Chairperson Helen Zille yesterday expressed satisfaction with the progress of the party's virtual policy conference that took place over the weekend. Yesterday (Sunday) the two hundred delegates dealt with the issue of economic inclusion. But as you may remember late last week that Gauteng Provincial Leader, John Moodey resigned saying he no longer felt at home in the party and that it had changed from what it used to be when he first joined 22 years ago. This was however disputed by the party’s interim leader John Steenhuisen.
