The Department of Correctional Services conducted surprise inspections in prisons across the country as part of Operation Vala last week. In Johannesburg's Sun City prison, a lot of contraband was confiscated, including cellphones and weapons. Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla says they hope to intensify these types of searches. Operation Vala was also launched to secure prisons and keep criminals behind bars.

Former president Jacob Zuma and former Home Affairs minister, Malusi Gigaba have been nominated on the ANC's list of nominees for the National Assembly.
