The Public Servants Association has confirmed that employees South African Revenue Service, SARS will proceed with a national strike on Thursday. Trade union NEHAWU and the PSA are demanding an 11 percent wage increase, while SARS is offering between six and seven per cent.

Not all students' organisations are happy that Higher Education Minister Naledi Pandor has allocated almost a billion-rand to settlement of the historic debt to universities. The issue has been one of the causes of protests at different universities. Yesterday, Pandor announced that an additional 967-million-rand had been set aside to settle historic debt owed by over 52-thousand NSFAS-funded continuing students. However, students' organisation SASCO says the historic debt settlement is a short-term solution to long-term problems.

Black First Land First (BLF), President Andile Mngxitama has blamed Tropical Cyclone Idai on the West saying it is "a direct consequence of the white, Western system of ecological assault for profits”. The BLF want the African Union to demand reparations and relief from the West for the disaster.

ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe has responded to the testimony of ANC head of Elections Fikile Mbalula at the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture. Mbalula told the commission last week that when he raised the issue of the Gupta family during an NEC meeting he was attacked. Speaking while on a campaign trail at Kathu in the Northern Cape Mantashe said the party was doing something regarding the influence the Gupta family had on the state.

We now look at South Africa’s new demerit system, which the Automobile Association (AA) of South Africa say is unconstitutional and more focused on collecting revenue than punishing offenders. Earlier this month, the National Assembly passed the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Bill and sent it to President Cyril Ramaphosa to be signed into law. The bill plans to introduce a new demerit system, a block on obtaining driving and vehicle licenses when failing to pay traffic fines
