When you think of the struggle against Apartheid in South Africa, most people think of late former president, Nelson Mandela. But while Mandela undoubtedly played a central role in the liberation struggle, there was a plethora of people who contributed to the country's freedom. People like Steve Biko, Walter Sisulu, and Oliver Tambo are some of the lesser known anti-apartheid activists. But why was Mandela the main symbol of the struggle? Does Mandela represent the entire liberation struggle? Why do we fail to celebrate other unsung heroes who left their mark on the liberation struggle, why were their names not elevated, like that of Mandela?
