    The SACP's first deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila has reportedly said PAC founder Robert Sobukwe was treated well by Apartheid government as compared to ANC prisoners who were "treated like slaves". Mapaila is said to have made the comments at a dialogue celebrating the Rivonia Triallists at Liliesleaf Farm, in Sandton, this week. The PAC has since dismissed Mapaila's claims and questioned the motives of what they term unwarranted attacks on the party.

    So yesterday we spoke to the chairperson of the Sekunjalo Group, Dr Iqbal Survé, who vehemently dismissed reports by the Sunday Times newspaper that he colluded with some Ayo board members to secure an investment from the Public Investment Corporation, to secure a R4.3 billion investment in the IT Company. During the interview Dr Surve claimed the reports were aimed at tarnishing his name and also asked us to Invite Sam Sole, a Journalist and managing partner of the amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism, who has written extensively on this matter, to question him about whether he was part of the list of Stratcom Journalist on the payroll of the Apartheid government.

    This morning we are in conversation with the former president of the South African National Olympic Committee, Vice President of the International Swimming Federation and International Olympic Committee member, Dr Sam Ramsamy about the role sports played in the contribution to the country's liberation and how he and others fought apartheid in sport. Dr Sam Ramsamy was also the chair of the South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee, which was responsible for Isolating Apartheid sport from International participation.     In his state of the nation address (Sona) last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Eskom will be remodelled and split into three state-owned entities dealing with generation, transmission and distribution. Recently, the President expressed his anger at the situation at Eskom had reached a stage of dysfunctionality. Many people are divided on Eskom, and how the country should move forward, where it’s concerned. This morning we get two views, Political Analyst Ralph Mathekga says Eskom a horse for which South Africa keeps on insisting it needs a new engine to pull an advanced carriage and that& that should have been privatized back under the apartheid system, while Catrina Godinho, Research Associate, University Of Cape Town believed the unbundling will have far reaching consequences for South Africa’s energy sector.

    The chairperson of the Sekunjalo Group, Dr Iqbal Survé, has dismissed reports that he has been using the bank account of one of his companies, which received billions of rands of government pension funds, as his personal piggy bank. The Sunday Times reported at the weekend that Dr Survé colluded with some Ayo board members to secure an investment from the Public Investment Corporation, which eventually led to the PIC making a R4.3 billion investment in the IT Company.

  • Ramaphosa makes two years of early childhood development compulsory
    This year there will be two years of compulsory early childhood development (ECD) for all children before they enter Grade one. President Cyril Ramaphosa made this announcement during his State of the Nation Address last week. Ramaphosa says his government will migrate early childhood education centres from the Department of Social Development to Basic Education. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has welcomed the move, stating that moving early childhood centres to her department will improve the quality of education in the country.

    The Equality Court has referred the matter between EFF leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu and Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan to the High Court in Johannesburg. This is after the opposition leaders challenged the constitutionality of section 10 of the Equality Act. The section outlaws hate speech which includes words or actions aimed at being hurtful, incitement or promoting hatred. The Equality Court has ruled that the magistrate's court lacks jurisdiction to determine the constitutionality of the legislation saying there were larger issues to be determined.
