Time now for our Youth Employment feature, we now speak to co-founder and chief executive of SweepSouth, Aisha Pandor who says the youth need to create businesses that would impact on unemployment, access to quality education and social cohesion, in order to improve the country. Ms Pandor was speaking at the Africa Travel Summit, which took place in Langa, Cape Town, last week. According to Stats SA, the national youth unemployment rate is approximately 40%, most being graduates. In 2011 we witnessed the Arab Spring in several countries of the Middle East. This saw the masses rise up against dictatorships and repressive regimes in their struggles for democracy. Long before and during the uprisings, workers and their trade unions played a major role in this struggle. Today as we know, other than Tunisia, those struggles for democracy was defeated and setback with repression even worse than before in the Middle East. Egypt is back under harsh military rule, Libya is in a constant civil war, Libya’s civil war continues with the country nearly destroyed and over half its population living as refugees in other countries. The people of Yemen are facing famine and disease due to the assaults by the Saudi regime. In today’s show we take a closer look at the situation of workers and their rights in the Middle East.
