Yesterday we spoke to MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela about their efforts to assist almost 1,000 homeless and destitute residents of Khayelitsha's SST Section, who were displaced following a deadly blaze this past weekend. The discussion sparked mixed views about the measures to ensure the affected families were temporarily housed and also about the provision for free housing. Ikhayalami is a Nonprofit Organisation whose primary aim is to develop and implement affordable technical solutions for Informal Settlement Upgrading. These are designed, where appropriate, to be imbedded into a community-driven process and scaled up with the support of the State. Ikhayalami was established in 2006 as a response to conventional approaches in dealing with informality, which is unsustainable and painstakingly slow in meeting the immediate needs of the vast majority of South Africa’s urban poor. They have been working on rebuilding shacks in Khayelitsha. By rebuilding the shacks, and not finding a solution for better accommodation, are we making it a norm for people to live in shacks?
