The National Launch of the National Science Week is set to take place at the University of Mpumalanga, this weekend. The initiative by the Department of Science and Technology is a countrywide celebration of science involving various stakeholders and role players conducting science-based activities during the week. National Science Week will be running from 11 to 19 August 2018, with a range science events held throughout August. Each year a different theme is chosen and activities are offered around the theme to the target audiences. The theme for 2018 is "Deepening our democracy through science ".

The Jobs Fund and Sernick Group have partnered with the Sernick Emerging Farmers Programme to assist emerging black farmers. The initiative is a comprehensive intervention in which emerging black farmers will be recruited, trained, capacitated and provided with supply opportunities through integration in Sernick's value chain. The R502.6 million project is set to be implemented in the Free State. An American man, Kerry Thomas, is serving a 30-year sentence for having sex without disclosing his HIV status - although he used condoms, and didn't infect his partner. It's understood that thousands of people living with HIV have been prosecuted, most of who did not actually pass on the virus. Most prosecutions have taken place in the USA, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Zimbabwe. South Africa has not adopted an HIV-specific criminal law, although there was a push to do so in 1999.
