As the winter initiation season is nearing its end, disturbing reports have emerged suggesting that more initiates have died in initiation schools in the Eastern Cape compared with last year. These deaths occurred despite government interventions. Where then do we point the finger? What role can traditional leaders play in curbing these deaths?

Single/unmarried/Divorced fathers in South Africa are commonly believed to be largely uninvolved or disinterested in their children’s daily lives, and have to be forced to financially take care of their children. From the 5th of January 2018, Sections 2, 11 and 13(b) of the Amendment Act were operationalized, where in amongst others, provision is made for that parents who default on child maintenance will have their personal information submitted to credit bureaus, and face being blacklisted. For some men, their reason behind little to no presence in their children’s life, financially and otherwise, is a conflictual relationship with the child/ren’s mother after the demise of the parents’ romantic relationship, where the children become collateral damage. This morning we aim to understand, is it always their fault?

Sisonke are calling for support for the full decriminalization of sex work. Currently, South Africa fully criminalizes sex work, for both buyers and sellers. Sisonke, a movement of sex workers, by sex workers says this has resulted in stigma and discrimination against sex workers; extraordinarily high levels of violence; exploitation of minors, and lack of access to health and legal services for sex workers.
