In 2013 Caribbean Heads of Governments established the CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) with a mandate to prepare the case for reparatory justice for the region’s indigenous and African descendant communities who are the victims of Crimes against Humanity (CAH) in the forms of genocide, slavery, slave trading, and racial apartheid. The Caricom Reparations Justice Program (CRJP) recognizes the special role and status of European governments in this regard, being the legal bodies that instituted the framework for developing and sustaining these crimes. This morning we discuss reparations, with a special focus of the Caribbean context, asking: Should former slave holding powers pay reparations to the descendants of slaves?

The National Health Insurance Bill has been gazetted. Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi was releasing details on the NHI Bill and the Medical Schemes Amendment Bill, yesterday in Pretoria. Dr Motsoaledi says the first amendment in the medical schemes bill is to abolish co-payments, which means that the full cost of care should be charged to medical schemes. Meanwhile, the Free Market Foundation has questioned the government's motives relating to the NHI scheme, the foundation says the scheme and amendments are "unequivocal violations of South Africans' constitutional rights to freedom of association and access to healthcare".
