What is the function of the South African Reserve Bank and how does it maintain financial stability in the country? Reliable archive material tells us that the South African Reserve Bank was established in 1921 as the central bank of South Africa in terms of a special act of Parliament. The Reserve Bank was mainly set up because of the need to issue uniform banknotes and to prevent the over-issue of banknotes. The primary or strategic objective of the bank is to achieve and maintain stable financial conditions in the country. Today, the Reserve Bank virtually performs the full range of functions and duties that are customarily carried out by central banks. But - is it fulfilling its mandate?

The proposed Prevention and Management of Learner Pregnancy in Schools (Draft policy) fails to frame itself with the right of learners (including pregnant learners) to access basic education, and the state’s duty to protect this right, at its centre. So says a statement released by both Equal Education Law Centre and Section 27. One of their concerns is that the Draft Policy fails to provide sufficient details or a clear course of action as It does not adequately describe the scope and content of sexual reproductive health services (SRHS) to be provided in schools and the persons responsible persons for the provision of these services.

South Africa's Unemployment rate has increased to 27,2% in the second quarter from 26.6% in the first quarter, according to the latest unemployment numbers announced by Statistics South Africa. Manufacturing lost 105,000 jobs; community, social and personal services lost 93,000; and trade lost 57,000 jobs. This morning on our Youth Employment feature we speak to Sabelo Myeni, the Head of Mindworx Academy. Sabelo has been awarded the 2018 Standard Bank Rising Star Award, for his work in developing inexperienced graduates into poised and appropriately skilled professionals who are capable of performing entry-level jobs and in so doing gaining a foot into the formal sector of the South African economy.

For over a century, the mining industry was at the heart of South Africa’s economy. It is said that it is an industry in decline, currently contributing only 8% to SA’s economy. But there remains a scramble by local and foreign investors for our mineral wealth, due its high demand and profitability. However, while our government promotes mining as a job creator and support for Black Economic Empowerment, it seems like it has come at huge costs to mineworkers, their families, mining communities and the environment. In today’s show we take a critical look at mining and whether it is worth the costs.
