On The Talking Point this Monday morning we pay tribute to Anti-apartheid activist Dr. David Webster. Workers' Day marked 29 years since Dr Webster was assassinated. Webster, an anthropologist at the University of the Witwatersrand, was gunned down in 1989 outside his home in Troyeville, Johannesburg. Ferdi Barnard, a former member of the apartheid military's covert Civil Co-operation Bureau hit squad, was convicted for Webster's murder. The Mangosuthu University of Technology has established a safety management team to look into security measures at residences, following the death 21-year-old Zolile Khumalo at MUT's Lonsdale residence in the Durban city centre. 23-year old Thabani Mzolo appeared briefly in court today on charges of murder and illegal possesion of a firearm and ammunition. MUT's SRC has since called for better security for students living off campus.

Gawie Cillié, employment relations expert and lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) says the alarming result is directly linked to the low levels of trust between employers and employees in South Africa – a mistrust that has been cultivated over many years. This coupled with poor reliance on professional management, the country’s capacity to retain and attract talent, as well as the high unemployment and poverty levels, have all contributed to a negative labour-employee relationship.

Special Envoy for South Africa's candidature for the United Nations Security Council, Aziz Pahad has made a global appeal for the country's bid to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Aziz Pahad made the announcement during a Freedom Day's celebration in New York City. This will be the third time South Africa is a member of the UN Security Council since 1994.
