A woman in Georgia is crying foul saying that police detectives lied to her in order to obtain her DNA. Police then used that DNA and the relatively new investigative genetic genealogy technique to match her son to a cold case murder. Asking innocent people to voluntarily provide their DNA is known as “target testing” and when this case goes to trial in June, it could be the first to explore how police conduct investigations using genetic genealogy. Jon Schuppe, reporter for NBC News Digital, joins us for how once again the use of genetic genealogy by police is being questioned.

It is being called the Noah’s Ark of citrus, The Givaudan Citrus Variety Collection at UC Riverside in California and it has over 1,000 different citrus specimens. But one thing that could destroy it all, is the bacterial infection known as citrus greening which kills trees and produces inedible fruit. Citrus greening has caused over $2 billion in losses in Florida and worries are that it could also ruin things in California. The infection is transmitted by small insects, so the only way to keep them out is to put nets and screens around the trees. Gustavo Arellano, reporter at the LA Times, joins us for the effort to save citrus from greening.

Next, we have the first possible instance of community exposure of COVID-19 in northern California. A woman has been infected and she did not travel to the heart of the outbreak in China, or have contact with anyone that had the virus. It is concerning because it could be a sign that it is spreading in the community and it is tough to track who might have had contact with this woman. President Trump has set up a COVID-19 task force led by Mike Pence to handle the federal response but it continues to seem that coronavirus will continue its spread. Erin Allday, health writer at the San Francisco Chronicle, joins us for what to know about the latest case.

The Hot Pocket heiress Michelle Janavs was sentenced earlier this week to five months in prison for her role in the college admissions cheating scandal. She spent $300,000 to help her two daughters cheat on exams and secure admission for one of them to USC. While parents are pleading guilty and not-guilty, what is happening to the students wrapped up in this scandal? None of them have been charged with crimes, but they also have faced consequences in other ways. Kate Taylor, reporter at the NY Times, joins us for more on how the students have been affected.
