And the votes failed to re-open the government.  The Senate voted on two proposals, one backed by Republicans and one backed by Democrats, but neither gained enough support.  There are hopes however that now that we know what won’t pass, the two sides can come to a consensus on what will pass. 2017 marked the beginning of the end for Toys R Us, 2018 was all about Sears, and now 2019 will be all about JC Penney and whether they can avoid the same fate as Sears.  As companies struggle to keep up in the changing retail industry, Penney’s new CEO and her plan to save the company are getting some attention. Finally, Oscar nominations finally came in and as usual, there were surprises and snubs. But this dog is special, it not only learned with AIbut through computer simulations on a desktop, learning 1,000 times faster than the real world. In an effort to end the partial government shutdown that has been going on now for a month, President Trump offered a compromise deal which still included $5.7 B for the wall, but also included temporary protections for DACA recipients and extension of TPS, but the plan was a nonstarter with Democrats and many in conservative circles slammed the idea as amnesty for the wall. As the government shutdown continues, it seems that the conversation is starting to veer away from the actual issues… The humanitarian crisis at the border and the border wall itself.  A new report says that possibly thousands of migrant children were separated from their families and released before officials started officially counting them, and we have no idea with who or where they are. Stef Kight, reporter for Axios, joins us for more on what is happening at the border.

Next, there is a controversial startup called Ambrosia that is charging $8,000 to fill the veins of older people with the blood of younger people as a way to combat aging… and they accept PayPal. Erin Brodwin, science reporter for Business Insider, joins us to talk about the murky science behind this idea and where clinics are set up to get your treatment.

Finally, what are you doing this weekend?  Probably not going to Church. According to a new survey, two-thirds of young people say they have stopped going to church and 96% of them say life changes are the main reason why they don’t go anymore. It is the 27th day of the partial government shutdown and it seems like things are going backwards.  Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked President Trump to reschedule the State of the Union Address originally scheduled for Jan.29 citing security concerns. At the same time a bipartisan group of senators is pressing Trump to re-open the government. Daniel Lippman, reporter for Politico, joins us to discuss the politics of the ongoing shutdown.

Finally, Netflix has announced that it is raising the subscription prices for its streaming services and experts say that you should brace yourself for more increases in the future. More competition from new streaming services and the need for more original content is causing Netflix to spend more money than it brings in.
