  • Hayom Yom 28 Tammuz - All the Rebbeim said maamarim to purify the air

[On Shabbos Mevarchim, it is our custom] to recite the entire Book of Tehillim early in the morning and to hold a farbrengen on that day.

We read the haftarah beginning Shimu dvar A-donai (Yirmeyahu 2:4-28 and 4:1-2).

Each of the Rebbeim assigned certain maamarim

for the specific purpose (of purifying the atmosphere),

and these they would review publicly once every two or three years.

One of the maamarim that the Alter Rebbe would deliver is the one beginning Heichaltzu that appears in Likkutei Torah, without the emendations.

One of the maamarim of the Mitteler Rebbe is Yafah Shaah Achas,

which comprises the first ten chapters of the maamar entitled Hinei Kol Echad VeEchad Omer Elokai Neshamah that appears in Derech HaChayim.

One of the maamarim of the Tzemach Tzedek is the one beginning Mah Tovu that is to be found in Likkutei Torah.

One of the maamarim that my revered grandfather, the Rebbe Maharash, would deliver is Mi Chamocha BaEilim.

And one of the maamarim of my revered father, the Rebbe Rashab, is VeYadaata HaYom (Moscow, 5657/1897).

  • Hayom Yom 27 Tammuz - Remove your ego replace it with Bittul

    A brilliant and renowned prodigy,

with great talents and wondrously deep comprehension,

came to Liozna and devoted himself to the study of Chassidus.

    Thanks to his immense gifts,

he acquired a vast and broad knowledge of Chassidus in a short period of time.

At his first yechidus, he entered the Alter Rebbe’s study and asked:

    “Rebbe, what am I lacking?”

    The Alter Rebbe answered him:

    “You lack nothing,

for you are G‑d-fearing and a scholar.

You only have to remove your chametz, which signifies ego and arrogance,

and replace it with matzah, which signifies bittul, self-effacement.

“Now, a person who is arrogant [what is the remedy for arrogance?], a utensil, that was used with the arrogance

that one imagined to be light

    say a roasting spit,

‘repels the feet of the Divine Presence,’

for ‘he and [G‑d] cannot dwell in the same place.’

    requires libun.

This means that it must be heated

until sparks fly off; that is, until the sparks of self-refinement fly outward and are incorporated in the true light.”

  • Hayom Yom 26 Tammuz - Studying Torah, like a student; praying, like a son

When a person is studying Torah,

he devotes himself to a concept

that he is trying to understand and that he [ultimately] understands.

    When he is praying,

he gives himself over to that which transcends his understanding.

    אִין לעֶרנעֶן תּוֹרָה פִילט זִיךְ אַ אִיד וִוי אַ תַּלְמִיד בּאַ אַ רֶבִּי'ן

    While studying Torah, a Jew feels like a student before his mentor;

    אִין דאַוְונעֶן — וִוי אַ קִינד בּאַ אַ פאָטעֶר

while praying, he feels like a son before his father.

  • Hayom Yom 25 Tammuz - No Jew is willing nor able to sever from G‑dliness

There are two statements very characteristic of Chassidus:

    (a) “A Jew [innately] recognizes G‑dliness

and is [inherently] sensitive to that which is supernatural.

He needs no proof of this.”

    (b) “No Jew is willing — and no Jew is able — to remain separate from G‑dliness.”

In truth, these two statements reflect a single point:

It is because “a Jew recognizes G‑dliness

and is sensitive to that which is supernatural,”

therefore “no Jew desires — and no Jew can — remain separate from Divinity.”

  • Hayom Yom 24 Tammuz - A Pnimi is a chassid who doesn't look for shortcuts

The Tzemach Tzedek used to say:

    “A pnimi is a chassid

for whom the very notion of asking [his Rebbe] for a blessing for [success in his] avodah

    is ‘empty talk.’

[A pnimi understands that] the approach should be to ‘let the work fall heavily on the people.’”

  • Hayom Yom 22 Tammuz - A Chassidic phrase, practice and melody bring .....

My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], once said:

“A chassidic teaching clears one’s mind and cleanses one’s heart.

A positive chassidic practice lights up one’s home.

A chassidic melody strengthens one’s hope and trust,

    brings joy,

  • Hayom Yom 21 Tammuz - A Jewish heart is a Sanctuary in which G‑d can abide.

[The custom in Chabad follows the ruling that] the blessing Shehecheyanu should not be recited during [the period of semi-mourning known as] bein hametzarim, even on Shabbos.

    It is written:

“They shall make Me a Sanctuary and I will dwell among them” —

that is, within each and every Jew.

For the innermost point of every Jewish heart is a Sanctuary in which G‑d can abide.

Now, the site of the Beis HaMikdash remains sacred even in the period of exile and desolation.

As is written in Shmos Rabbah, ch. 2,

“Rav Acha declared: ‘The Divine Presence will never depart from the Western Wall.’”

The desolation relates to the buildings alone.

The same applies to the personal Sanctuary within the heart of every Jew.

The foundation [always] remains intact, unpolluted and pure,

    as it is written,

“I am asleep, but my heart is awake.”

On these words, Midrash Rabbah comments:

“I am asleep from the mitzvos, but my heart is awake to acts of kindness.

I am asleep from acts of charity, but my heart is awake to do them.”

The whole concept of “desolation” among the Jewish people, Heaven forbid,

    הוּא רַק בְּדוּגְמַת הַבִּנְיָנִים שֶׁמִּחוּץ לְהַיְסוֹד

    applies only [to superficial matters], like the buildings that stand above the foundation;

    אֲבָל הַיְסוֹד דְּמִקְדָשׁ הַפְּרָטִי הוּא בִּקְדוּשָּׁתוֹ

the foundation of the personal Sanctuary remains holy.

  • Hayom Yom 20 Tammuz - Three meditations: 1)study, 2)before praying, 3)prayer

There are three kinds of meditation:

    (a) Meditation associated with study:

After a person understands a concept thoroughly, he meditates on its depth until its intellectual content illuminates him.

    (b) Meditation before praying:

The point here is to experience the vitality of the concept that one has studied, not its intellectual aspect, as in the case of meditation associated with study.

    (c) Meditation in the course of prayer:

The purpose here is to sense the Divinity within the concept one has studied.

These are three rungs on the ladder of spiritual sensitivity.

At times, solely due to G‑d’s grace, one senses Divinity without any form of service.

This is a result of the essential quality of the soul.

However, with regard to Divine service that stems from our own initiative, the above three steps are necessary.

  • Hayom Yom 19 Tammuz - Travelers prayer when traveling from home

Among the practices of my revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab]:

    When traveling from home,

though he might remain in a single place for several months,

he would recite the Prayer for Travelers every day after the morning prayers —

albeit without mentioning G‑d’s Name or His sovereignty.
