  • Hayom Yom 4 Adar - 1) A taste for G-dly concepts. 2) The Mitteler Rebbe would say Shh, Shh

    Hayom Yom 4 Adar 1 - Acquiring a taste for G-dly concepts

The first step in preparing for disciplined meditation,

    especially on G‑dly concepts,

    הוּא

    requires:

    א) יְגִיעַת בָּשָׂר לְהָסִיר הַטּוּב טַעַם מֵעִנְיָנֵי עוֹלָם

    (a) toiling with the flesh to remove one’s pleasurable taste for worldly matters;

    ב) יְגִיעַת נֶפֶשׁ לְעוֹרֵר הַטּוּב טַעַם בְּמוּשְׂכָּלוֹת בִּכְלָל

    (b) toiling with the soul to arouse a pleasurable taste for the contemplation of concepts in general,

    וּבְעִנְיָנֵי אֱלֹקוּת בִּפְרָט

and of G‑dly concepts in particular.

Hayom Yom 4 Adar 2 - The Mitteler Rebbe would say Shh, Shh

When the Mitteler Rebbe would deliver discourses of Chassidus, there was utter silence.

Nevertheless, in the midst of his delivery, he would say Shh, Shh.

My father [the Rebbe Rashab] explained

that this was intended to quiet the gushing thoughts of his prolific mind.

With this, my father elucidated the statement of the Zohar:

“The elder’s mind is contained, for it is still and calm.”

  • Hayom Yom 3 Adar - 1) Loving every Jew 2) A scholar can attain the level of a simple Jew

Hayom Yom 3 Adar 1 - Loving a fellow Jew, applies to every Jew

    The Alter Rebbe taught

that the mitzvah of ahavas Yisrael, loving a fellow Jew, applies to every member of the Jewish people, even if one has never seen him.

How much more does it apply to a member of the Jewish neighborhood in which one lives, to every man or woman who is a member of one’s own community.

Hayom Yom 3 Adar 2 - A scholar can attain the level of a simple Jew

The following is an answer that the Tzemach Tzedek gave

to a chassid who was exceedingly well versed in the entire Talmud and in the scholarly writings of Chassidus:

Kabbalas ol, the unquestioning acceptance of G‑d’s yoke, transforms a person’s essence.

By adopting the kabbalas ol of a simple servant,

whose yoke of servitude is apparent even when he sleeps,

even a scholar and a genius can attain

the lofty rung and stature of a simple, artless Jew who serves G-d with mesirus nefesh, with self-sacrificing devotion.

  • Hayom Yom 2 Adar - 1) Intellectual service of G‑d, 2) Blessing needs an object to take hold

Hayom Yom 2 Adar 1 - Intellectual service of G‑d, search for the truth

    The Alter Rebbe

provided the members of the chassidic brotherhood with a path in the intellectual service of G‑d and the search for the truth.

This entails examining whether every action is dictated only by the truth

and is motivated by one’s endeavors in Divine service.

This path of service does not involve breaking down mountains, shattering boulders and overturning the world, as some utterly mistaken people think.

The simple truth is that any activity or endeavor, whatever it may be, if it is carried out with sincere intent, suffices:

    אַ בְּרָכָה בְּכַוָּנָה

    a blessing recited with concentration;

    דעֶם וואָרט אִין דאַוונעֶן כִּדְבָעִי בַּהֲכָנַת הַלֵּב וּבִידִיעָה לִפְנֵי מִי אַתָּה עוֹמֵד

    the words of prayer uttered with a prepared heart and with a knowledge of “before Whom one stands”;

    אַ פָּסוּק חוּמָשׁ בִּידִיעָה שֶׁהוּא דְבַר ה

    a verse from Chumash with the awareness that it is the Word of G‑d;

    אַ פָּסוּק תְּהִלִּים

    a verse from Tehillim;

    וּמִּדָה טוֹבָה לְקָרֵב לִבּוֹ שֶׁל חֲבֵרוֹ בְּאַהֲבָה וְחִבָּה

or the positive trait of drawing one’s friend close with love and affection.

True, to attain this requires awesome and tremendous exertion.

One must study extensively and with understanding, every individual according to his level.

G‑d will then help him [so that his efforts] will be genuine.

Hayom Yom 2 Adar Sheini - A blessing needs an object to take hold

A blessing requires some object upon which to take hold,

like rain that falls upon a plowed and sown field,

or like the early and late rains that fall upon the produce of the field or vineyard.

But if a field is left fallow, neither plowed nor sown,

the early and late rains will not be of any benefit.

  • Hayom Yom 1 Adar - 1) Every soul has its individual duties 2) In Yaaleh VeYavo we say

Hayom Yom 1 Adar 1 - Every soul has its individual duties

[In the above note, the Rebbe spells out the unusual meaning of an abbreviation that appears in the Hebrew text of Torah Or.]

It is written, “A man goes out to his work and to his labor until evening.”

Every soul [is assigned] both general and particular tasks when it descends to this material plane.

This mission is alluded to by the phrase, “A man goes out to his work.”

That is, the soul leaves its standing in the treasure-store of souls in the celestial heights,

and descends level after level until it becomes enclothed in the body and in the natural, animal soul.

The goals [of this descent] are (a) man’s “work” — his overall tasks of empowering [spiritual] form over [tangible] matter,

and illuminating the world with the light of the Torah and the lamp of the mitzvos —

and (b) his “labor,” his particular tasks.

For every soul has its individual duties in the realm of intellect and emotion, based upon its nature and inclinations….

[These endeavors continue] “until evening” —

only as long as one can still take action, as it is written, “[…the commandments that I command you to do] today, to perform them.” [And on this phrase the Sages comment, “They can be performed today (i.e., in This World), and not tomorrow (i.e., in the World to Come).”]

From a deeper perspective, the above verse may be understood

[…] as alluding to the soul’s [heightened] ascent following its descent (“a man goes out”) to the material realm.

When the soul ascends after having been clothed in a body in This World below,

[it proceeds] “to its work:” its activities in the World to Come echo its [former] work in This World.

If, [while in This World,] that person had set aside regular hours for Torah study,

that soul is allowed in the other world, too, to enter the tents of Torah study.

Moreover, [when the soul ultimately ascends,] it proceeds "to its labor:” if, [while in This World,] it engaged in its labors of Divine service properly,

    it then ascends “until erev.”

It ascends level after level, until it apprehends the pleasant sweetness (areivus) of the Essence of the [infinite] Ein Sof.

Hayom Yom 1 Adar Sheni - In the passage Yaaleh VeYavo

    In the passage Yaaleh VeYavo,

the letter beis in the phrase zochreinu A-donai Elokeinu bo has a dagesh,

but in the phrase u’fakdeinu vo it does not have a dagesh.

  • Hayom Yom 30 Shvat - The first day in Lubavitch as the birthday

Many chassidim used to consider the day they first came to Lubavitch as their birthday.

My teacher, the Rashbatz, arrived in Lubavitch for the first time

on the Thursday night of Parshas Mishpatim, 5608 (1848).

Every year, [on that evening,] he would stay awake throughout that night,

and [in the morning] put on his tefillin at precisely the hour that he had entered the study of the Tzemach Tzedek [for yechidus] for the first time.

“The commentary of Rashi on the Chumash is ‘the wine of the Torah.’

  • Hayom Yom 28 Shvat - Help your body do not break him

A teaching of the Baal Shem Tov:

[It is written:] When you see the donkey (chamor) —

that is, when you carefully inspect your chomer, your body,

    you will see…

    one who hates you —

for it hates the soul that longs for G‑dliness and spirituality.

    Furthermore, you will see

    that it is…

    lying under its burden —

G‑d intended that the body be refined by studying Torah and observing mitzvos, but it is lax in fulfilling its task.

Hence you might think that you should…

refrain from helping him to fulfill its mission,

and instead, mortify yourself in order to break [the body’s] material tendencies.

However, this will not cause the light of the Torah to dwell [within you].

    Instead,...

you must certainly help him —

by refining and purifying your body, rather than breaking it through self-affliction.

that whenever they encountered something that was halachically permitted
