  • Hayom Yom 24 Shvat - 1) Divinity is vitality 2) Tehillim breaks barriers

During the reading of the Ten Commandments [in the synagogue on the Shabbos of Parshas Yisro], it is our custom to stand and face the Torah scroll.

The haftarah [for Parshas Yisro] begins BiShnas... and ends ...matzavtah (Yeshayahu 6:1-13).

[On Shabbos Mevarchim, it is our custom] to recite the entire Book of Tehillim early in the morning and to hold a farbrengen on that day.

It is written, “The people saw and they stirred.”

    אַז זֵיי האָבּעֶן דעֶרזעֶהן גֶ-טלִיכְקַייט אִיז שׁוֹין וַיָּנוּעוּ

    As soon as they beheld Divinity, they were stirred;

    עֶס אִיז געֶוואָרעֶן אַ תְּנוּעַת חַיִּים

    they showed signs of vitality.

    אִלּוּ יְדַעְתֶּם — אָמַר אַדְמוּ"ר הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק

The Tzemach Tzedek once said, “If you only knew

the power that lies in the verses of Tehillim and their effect in the celestial heights,

you would recite them all the time.

Know that the chapters of Tehillim break through all barriers

and soar aloft from level to level, unimpeded.

They intercede before the Master of the Universe

and secure their effect with kindness and mercy.”

  • Hayom Yom 23 Shvat - A woman of valor, the crown of her husband

Once, as the Alter Rebbe was leaving his room, he heard

his rebbitzin telling several women: “Mainer (literally, ‘My one’ - i.e., ‘my husband’) says….”

    The [Alter] Rebbe told [her]:

“I am yours by virtue of one mitzvah.

With how many mitzvos are we G‑d’s!”

He then fell to the doorstep, absorbed in a state of dveikus.

After emerging from that state, he [gave a mystical interpretation of the verse, “Go out and see, O daughters of Zion!”]:

    “‘Go out and see…’ — self-transcendence and seeing G‑dliness

comes about by virtue of the ‘daughters of Zion.’

[In the Kabbalistic metaphor of spiritual marriages,] Malchus arouses Z’eir Anpin.

[And indeed,] in the Ultimate Future, ‘A woman of valor [will be] the crown of her husband.’“

  • Hayom Yom 22 Shvat - Man-made laws and Divine law

There are two kinds of laws:

    (a) laws that generate life and

    (b) laws that result from life.

    Man-made laws result from life.

That is why they differ in every country, each according to its local circumstances.

G‑d’s Torah is the Divine law that generates life.

It is “the Torah of truth” —

the same in all places and at all times.

    The Torah is eternal.

  • Hayom Yom 21 Shvat - Organize a society of the chassidic daughters

It is the duty of chassidic women and girls

to stand in the front line of every activity [that seeks] to strengthen the observance of Yiddishkeit in general,

particularly with regard to taharas hamishpachah (“family purity”).

They should organize a society for the daughters of the chassidic brotherhood,

whose aim is to buttress all aspects of the chassidic lifestyle with regard to guidance and education,

in the age-old tradition of chassidic households.

  • Hayom Yom 20 Shvat - Before a meal wash the hands three times

My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], writes in a letter:

“According to Hagahos Oshri, when washing our hands for a meal we should pour [water from a vessel] three times consecutively [over each hand].

My revered father, the Rebbe [Maharash], would conduct himself in this manner.

He would leave a little water from the third pouring in the palm of his left hand

and would rub this over both hands.”

  • Hayom Yom 19 Shvat - To know that there is a Primary Being

    The first positive commandment is,

according to the wording of Rambam, “To know that there is a Primary Being who brings into being all existence…

Knowing this concept [fulfills] a positive commandment, as it is written, ‘I am G‑d, your L‑rd.’ “

This mitzvah centers on the brain and the mind.

Although every single Jew believes in G‑d with simple faith

and his heart is wholly and artlessly with G‑d,

the brain and mind are obligated to bring this faith to the point of knowledge and comprehension.

This is what is meant by the obligation “to know that there is a Primary Being.”

One must know this in terms of comprehension and understanding,

as it is written, “Know the G‑d of your father and serve Him wholeheartedly.” It is likewise written, “And you shall know this day… [that G‑d is the L‑rd].”

The Tzemach Tzedek told his son, my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash],

It was relayed to the Alter Rebbe by R. Menachem Mendel of Horodok, the author of Pri HaAretz,

who was present when the maamar was first delivered,

The haftarah [for Parshas Beshalach] begins U’Devorah ishah neviah (Shoftim 4:4-24 and 5:1-31).

It is customary to eat buckwheat [on this day].

On Shabbos Parshas Beshalach, 5621 [1861], the Tzemach Tzedek delivered the maamar entitled Re’u Ki Havayah, which appears in Likkutei Torah.

He later told his son, my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash]:

On Shabbos Parshas BeShalach, 5565 [1805], my revered grandfather, the [Alter] Rebbe, delivered this maamar

and called me and told me

that in the year 5529 [1769], while he was [studying] in Mezritch, the Maggid called him to his room and told him:

“On Shabbos Parshas BeShalach, 5516 [1756], the Baal Shem Tov delivered a maamar

on the verse, ‘And before dawn, the sea returned to its original strength,’ the last phrase of which our Sages interpret as meaning, ‘according to its stipulation.’

“In 5521 [1761], (this was a year after the passing of the Baal Shem Tov),”

the Maggid continued, “my master, (the Baal Shem Tov,) appeared to me

and delivered the maamar [again], adding an explanation of the concept of ‘fulfilling the will’ — as distinct from fulfilling the utterance — ‘of the Omnipresent.’

“Today,” [concluded the Alter Rebbe,] “my master [the Maggid] appeared to me to review the maamar.”

The Maggid delivered the maamar before the Alter Rebbe

and added an explanation regarding [the splitting of] the Ginai River [for R. Pinchas ben Yair], likening it to the Splitting of the Sea of Reeds.

    The Tzemach Tzedek concluded:

“Today, the Baal Shem Tov, the Maggid, and my revered grandfather, the [Alter] Rebbe, appeared to me. Each of them delivered the maamar to me according to his own style.”

A few hours later the Tzemach Tzedek again summoned my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash],

and gave him an explanation of that maamar.

  • Hayom Yom 16 Shvat - Divinity is fire and passion

My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], once said:

“Only a very fine line separates spiritual frigidity from an actual denial of G‑d.

  • Hayom Yom 15 Shvat - Publishing the Likkutei Torah

    Tachanun is not recited.

By the time the task of printing the second part of Torah Or was undertaken,

the chassidim had already found out that the Tzemach Tzedek had written glosses and explanations to the maamarim.

They pleaded with him to print them together with the maamarim,

    but he refused.

The Tzemach Tzedek then dreamt that his grandfather, the Alter Rebbe, came to visit him and asked him to publish them.

    However, he concealed the matter,

until three of his sons had the same dream and related it to their father.

Only then did he agree to append his glosses and commentary to the second part [of Torah Or],

    which was entitled Likkutei Torah.
